YELLOW FEVER AS AUSSIES BASK IN D&AD GLORY

It was a big night for Australia with a record four Yellow Pencils (out of a record seven Nominations) at the D&AD Global Awards last week in London. Gary Freedman from The Glue Society was there to collect two Yellow Pencils for Virgin Mobile, as was Richard Muntz, representing George Patts Y&R Melbourne, who picked up the Yellow Pencil for the VB 'Boony' campaign, and Warren Brown from BMF Sydney who picked up a Yellow Pencil for the Tooheys 'Stolen Glasses' campaign. Andy Blood, CD of TBWA\ Whybin, Auckland, was also there to collect a Yellow Pencil for Adidas 'Be the Ball'
This was the first year D&AD's judging system has opened up to the rest of the world in its 43 year old history, thanks to pressure from the top Aussie and Kiwi creative directors last year.
Here are a few pics (mainly of the Aussies and expats) from the night.

Just four yellow pencils? I've counted a few times, and I can clearly see thirteen.

Hey, it's Malcolm Poynton. That should guarantee a few libellous comments in the next day or so...

And best of all, chicks look at you in a whole new way. http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/8056/1297/1600/IMG_1834.jpg.

Hey Ben, bet you hated Muntzy picking up your BOONY award?

Malcolm is actually a great bloke. He may not be the best manager of people but he is a stand up good guy who has done a lot of good work.

Agreed, 8:58AM. He's actually a very principled fellow ... something you don't find a lot of in life, let alone advertising.

Hey Gary, heard there was a bit of a squabble on the night. Who was it that grabbed one of your Yellow Pencils and took it home?

And where would we be without Malcolm Poynton's original Big Ad for British Airways? There would have been nothing to satirize.

Anonymous said:

Fuck Boony, I want a Malcolm doll.... sorry, a Malc doll.

I don't think Malc did the ad the Big Ad satirised. He would have been about 12 at the time.

The BA 'Global' spot (better known as the 'Face' ad) went to air globally in 1990. It was created by Jeremy Clarke and Graham Fink at Saatchi's London, and directed by Hugh Hudson (he of Chariots of Fire fame). For several years, it was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the most expensive commercial of all time. Despite its greatness, it only managed to win a Bronze Lion at Cannes in 1990. The only Malcolm involved in the spot was Malcolm MacLaren (he of Sex Pistols management fame), who arranged the music. In 1990, I think Malcolm Poynton was just starting out at OMON in Sydney.

Hey 4.21 pm, is that the same interactive company that has won other gongs off the back of other agencies for Virgin in the past? Making banners out of other people's ideas isn't creative, the last time I heard.
