AWARD COMMITTEE NOMINATIONS – TOP CREATIVE DIRECTORS WILLING TO SUPPORT IN 2008
AWARD has announced nominations by the AWARD Membership for the 2008 and 2009 Regional Executive Committee, including Darryn Devlin, the man who led AWARD to independence and financial health two years back (pictured with his AWARD co-chairman at the time, Paul Prince).
The stellar line-up is the best nomination list for AWARD in more than 20 years (including six very high profile creative directors and a much needed CEO in the form of Marty O’Halloran of DDB Australia/NZ, who is also on the AFA and CAANZ committees) will now go forward to the next stage of voting by the membership;

AWARD’s executive representative from Asia will be nominated at the first meeting of the 2008 & 2009 Committee in March.
The AWARD Co-Chairmen, Paul Prince and Philip Putnam say; “AWARD is honored to receive a a list of nominees of such stature for the 2008 and 2009 Committee. Since the 2006 committee voted for independence our members have given us overwhelming support. To see so many industry leaders willing to share their time with AWARD is humbling, and a great reflection on the value of AWARD to its members. Thank you all.”
AWARD Members will now be sent ballot forms and detailed biographies of each nominee to cast their votes.
The results will be revealed at the AWARD AGM on March 5th, 5pm at The White Horse Hotel in Surry Hills. A full Executive Committee Meeting will then be held March 6th in Sydney, where portfolios will be allocated.

AWARD members, make sure the creative leaders of the industry get on this year’s committee – Steve Back, Richard Maddocks, Darryn Devlin, Andy DiLallo and (for CEO input) Marty O’Halloran. Having the best CDs on the committee was always the case in the first 12 years of AWARD (look up any book from 1979 to 1991), but since then the committees have been populated by midweights and lightweights which has put the big guys off nominating. Let’s get AWARD more like The One Club (look at their Board of Directors in any One Show annual, the very biggest CDs in the US).
With three nominations from top TVC people (Michael Ritchie, Jonathan Samway and Paul Friedman), one should automatically get a place (I suggest it’s payment for the Kodak Gongs folding into AWARD), then five of the heavy ones should definitely get on the committee, namely Darryn Devlin, Steve Back, Richard Maddocks, Marty O’Halloran and Andy DiLallo (or his partner Jay Benjamin).
And Mike O’Sullivan must get on for NZ.
Hopefully the membership votes them on — people of this calibre won’t bother again if rejected this time.
Paul Worboys from Saatchis is also representing digital, and I reckon a digital rep on AWARD would be a fucking useful step forward.

2:39 I don’t know if you are a ‘Creative leader’ of this industry or if you are a Lightweight, Midweight or Heavyweight. The truth is, I don’t care. But, what AWARD has tried to do in the last few years is to broaden the representation on the Committee to avoid ‘factional’ blocks or ‘Mate’s Clubs’ and ensure everyone in the industry has a voice. All the people aforementioned with the notable exception of Richard and Darryn all worked at some point or another for the same agency. You catch my drift. You mentioned AWARD from 1979-1991 as some kind of Golden Era and it might have been, but as a former interstate creative I can tell you that AWARD was seen as very Sydney, with some token Melbourne agencies thrown in (mainly the Palace) and a closed bastion of the so-called Pommy Mafia. Committee members seemed to be the same over and over and over again, the same agencies always won and young up and comers were nowhere in sight. Well, I will hate that to happen to AWARD again. Nowadays, there’s a healthy mix of heavies, not so heavies and young turks on the Committee, but as far as I know, everyone deserves to be there. But, again, it is all credit to AWARD. They have done a magnificent job over the years of integrating not only the other states and a multitude of disciplines (DM, Interactive, Design, Post, Music), But also adapt to a ever changing media landscape and expand internationally into Asia-Pacific. Keep on the good work and a representation that is reflective of the industry as a whole and not just a minuscule section. AWARD for all its members.
Yeah let’s get a real digital guy on there. How can anyone from an agency like NetX be invited to participate when noone from digital hotshops like Soap or Tequila get a mention???

Which equates to nepotism. A limited vote amongst chummy industry old schoolers does not make a democracy. It’s more like George Bush’s version of democracy.
10:08, Drop the Aggro, please. If you have concerns why don’t you raise them with someone at the Executive Committee? Are you a paid member of AWARD? Use your voice, then. But don’t question the system. It is as fair as it can get considering that AWARD is made up of members and each member has a vote. Sometimes we might not agree with the decisions made but if you have a better and fairer way to do things, then speak up.
You vote … then you get elected based on votes. There’s nothing fairer.
And it’s not industry mates … these are people who are AWARD members. If you want a say, become a member. It’s as simple as that. It’s no club – it is very transparent and honest.
I agree. There’s no conspiracy here. The people on the committee deserve to be on there. It is no club, just the best of our industry voted for by members of AWARD. There’s no one with special powers who can dictate who sits on there.

As a former committee member, I must say it is fantastic to see that there are so many top names on the list. But let’s hope they have the time to fulfill their duties. Previously, most CDs don’t turn up to meetings due to their heavy workloads. Let’s hope this is a thing of the past.
