CADBURY SCHWEPPES BURSTS INTO SUPER-SLO-MO VIA GPY&R MELBOURNE

Picture 3.pngGeorge Patterson Y&R, Melbourne has teamed up with Exit director Garth Davis to create the latest brand campaign for Schweppes Australia. Titled 'Burst' the COMMERCIAL captures the feeling of Schweppervescensce using super-slow motion cameras, capable of recording 10,000 frames per second. The first spot launched during the cricket on the weekend, with four others to follow.
Shot entirely in Victoria, the campaign features some stunning imagery of our local surrounds including the Manchester Unity building, Little Collins street and various locations in the Otway National Park.
Says GPY&R Melbourne ECD Ben Coulson: "We are all very proud to present this work. It is the fruit of many peoples hard work and conviction. I think it has produced  something beautiful and unique to Schweppes. At Patts Melbourne we have a bit of a tradition of producing our best work for our biggest and often hardest clients. To make world class work is what we all strive for, to do it for Cadbury Schweppes is even better. From day one they were focussed on making something special with this project, I hope we have delivered for them. An extra special thanks must go to Garth and the Exist team, who were in absolute cracking form on this one."
Says Garth Davis: "It's not often in the commercial realm that you get the chance to be truly artistic...a testament to the clients willingness to create something outside the ordinary (even if they were very nervous!)."

Awesome. I saw it on tv over the weekend and it really cut through. Well done dudes.

Well done lads.

Anonymous said:

Stunning! Absolutely stunning!

Anonymous said:

Congratulations guys, impossible to believe that beautiful piece of work came from the client who gave us dancing chocolate people. An absolute coup!

Anonymous said:

World class. Well done.

Anonymous said:

Patts might have lost some glamour teams, but on merit, they are still doing the best stuff in Melbourne by a country mile. Well done boys.

Anonymous said:

This came from Australia? Nice.

Anonymous said:

Nice one.

Whoever wrote that song should use the ad as a film clip.

Anonymous said:

Love it, just wish there was something in the blurb about Jim's Balls.

Tails said:

Even without the degree of difficulty bonus points it rates very, very highly.
Jealousy inducing simplicity, bang on brand.

Anonymous said:

Yeah it's pretty but what's the IDEA??????????

Shame to waste such a great song too. The lyrics have zero relevance...

Anonymous said:

I prefer the old ads where a clever fireman puts out a burning building with a bottle of Schweppes. Genius.

Anonymous said:

Classic Couzens. Well not really. Where was the penis/boob/fart gag?

Swede said:

Awesome work, guys.

Anonymous said:

Ok, that has just raised the 2008 bar.

Anonymous said:

It's from the 'do some art and put a logo on it school'. But, to be fair it is a bloody good one.

Anonymous said:

Excellent. Well done chaps I see Gold, Gold Gold.

Anonymous said:

Ben and Jim. Can you two please stop posting comments about your own work. It feels so much better when someone else pumps up your tyres.

Anonymous said:

Wow.
Personally, I know an ad is really great, when at the end of it, I am sad it's only an ad.

Anonymous said:

It made me feel all warm and wet inside. Nice work.
Is that Cuz in one of those shots?

Anonymous said:

great pics crap track. track sends me to sleep instead of delivering great feeling of schweppervesence. with proper track its pure gold.

Anonymous said:

holy shit. that is fucking amazing. and for schweppes too. does anyone (read: guys at patts) know if will be used internationally? it should be. would be nice for a spot like that to go global and have come from melbourne. jealous. only complaint is one shot at the start reminded me of sony. but the rest made up for it.

Anonymous said:

Filled with coloured liquid, this would have been a worthy successor to Bravia 'Balls'.
Props.

Alex said:

I love this. My favourite ad of the year. By far.

Anonymous said:

Good but not great. It hurts to say it but Singos 'capture the feeling commercial' better in their Coke spot.

Anonymous said:

speechless. i watched it 3 times.

Anonymous said:

Top marks.

Anonymous said:

Now that the Agency who perpetrated this has had their say,i'l have mine....No,its not that good......its an amalgamation of several other good ads rolled into this poor one.....Ssschh...ite.

Anonymous said:

Why isn't work like this coming out of Clems? If you believe all the hype of the last year, the creative talent had been lured there, for big numbers. Good to see the other Patts boys with their heads down and tails up. Very good stuff.

Anonymous said:

Te empire strikes back!

Anonymous said:

Who sings that? Its a great trrack.

Anonymous said:

WELL DONE......GREAT MUSIC CHOICE TOO. SAW IT OVER THE W/E AND IT EVEN CUT THROUGH MY "TOO MANY BEERS WATCHING THE CRICKET" HAZE!

Anonymous said:

Great eye candy, no idea.

Anonymous said:

I hate how much I love that.

Anonymous said:

Track doesn't do much for me, but the rest of the ad is a nice change.

Give me exploding water balloons over koalas any day.

Anonymous said:

Great work and it shows that there is life beyond beer.

Anonymous said:

Everyone's told you bastards how good it is, so get a Mammoth up ya!
Jim, I owe you $20 bucks and I feel guilty.

Bones.

Anonymous said:

Funny: No hype. No clever PR launch. Just a bloody nice ad let loose to do it's own talking. Still waiting for the next "big ad". Or maybe this is it...

Anonymous said:

OMG, THAT WAS AMAZING! JUST BRILLIANT!

(Is it really Cuz in that shot??)

Fookin lovely, nice to finally see some decent home grown telly. Best aussie tvc in over a year.

Anonymous said:

Whatever loser.

It was made using slow motion ballistics camera's. In order to capture the bubble effect that's actually found in Schweppervescensce.

What have you done lately mate?

IT'S BEEN DONE.

It's a Japanese commercial rip off.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rm3Zirh-j50

How about something original!

Anonymous said:

For those interested the track is "To Build a Home" by the Cinematic Orchestra. Found on the "Ma Fleur" album.

Great album, shame one of the best songs has been bastardised by a commercial which has no relevance to the lyrics.

Anonymous said:

Who's 4.38 grumpy at?

Anonymous said:

the full version is heaps better than what you get on TV. the cut down is boring, bravia-esque and devoid of the really beautiful shots. until I saw that, I hated it.

Anonymous said:

HEY 5.02, IT'S A TECHNIQUE, NOT A RIP OFF.
How about an original comment!

Anonymous said:

Fuckin' great stuff...

I was just wondering, and it may sound stupid, but does anyone think Cuz is hot>?

Anonymous said:

It's beautiful but that's about it.

Anonymous said:

Before all the usual blog hacks draw dumb comparisons to Sony, let me say I think this is beautiful & bang on for Schweppes. Sony & Fallon might wish they had done it.
It's bloody good, the old seen it before routine won't work this time. Just feel good that an Aussie agency is still playingon a world stage.

Anonymous said:

ART. CNTS.

Anonymous said:

I didn't know they had so many people left at GP/Y&R after the exodus.

They all earned their wages posting the positive comments above.

The ad is shit, well shot.

A nicely polished turd.

Anonymous said:

Long live the Dragons. Long live Rock n' Roll. Long live Ben and Jim. You're ripping it apart dudes. Respect. 888 Metal!

Anonymous said:

Are you drunk 5.02?

If you can't see the difference between a poxy youtube demonstration and that bloody great work shown above, I not only pity you, but the poor lady that spent hours unnecessarily bearing you.

Criticising something great because your name isn't on it... give the blog something original!

Have fun at Cannes boys!

Anonymous said:

Beautiful work boys. And yea 6:40 I'd definitely give cuz a punch in the knickers

Anonymous said:

Balloons like no other.

Anonymous said:

Hey Ben, Cuz and Jim, bet your glad you stayed around.

Anonymous said:

I bet Sony wish they had done it. Better than clay rabbits.

Anonymous said:

I don't intend this to be bitchy, but it is a good question. Clems did pay big dough to poach all the creative hot shots from Patts, but Patts seems to still be releasing all the good work. The only recent thing i've seen from Clems is a PR release about some work

Anonymous said:

I think they ripped off the soundtrack as well.

People get too hung up on originality.

Does it matter if the boys saw some cool water balloon popping shit on youtube and figured it'd make a good ad for a bubbly drink?

Did it matter that Juan Cabral saw old footage of balls cascading down a San Francisco street on Letterman and figured it'd make a good ad for a really colourful tv?

Fuck no, it doesn't matter. The whole point is... IS IT A GOOD AD? This is.

And if anyone thinks that jim and cuz and co (or anyone halfway decent) would deliberately copy a Japanese ad, then they've got shit for brains. The world is full of stuff that's already been done. Do you think cadbury schweppes give a shit that some japanese camera client did this two years ago? Nup. Neither do people watching it on tv either.

The fact is, It'd be a pretty amazing thing to make an ad that in no way referenced something already existing. You've got about a 1:1000000000 chance of that happening.

Anonymous said:

Cuz, do we have to wait till the Bonza bash to see Furious Dragon Love again? c'mon do something!

Anonymous said:

I saw both ads (Schweppes and VB) last night and both ads have that ‘stop, look and listen’. Even my 10 year old, on his way to bed, stopped in his tracks and watched the bubble ad. He thought it was awesome. So you gotta give Cuz and co cred for that!

Anonymous said:

That's two days you guys have wasted writing on the blog.

Anonymous said:

BRAVIO!!!

Anonymous said:

It goes to show how out of touch the Australian advertising community is when they applaud a pretentious thing like this and slam Commonwealth bank, which the public seem to really like.

You are ad people, not artists.

matt said:

sony bravia meets xbox water balloons.

Anonymous said:

at least stagger the times you submit your comments back to back.. dead giveaway.

Anonymous said:

I haven't read one post on this string yet that appears to be have been written by someone with a mental age of greater than 2.5.

You advertising people make real estate agents look like Mother Theresa. You should be ashamed of your egos.

It is a good ad that will make money for Schweppes which is all that matters. Fortunately, nobody in their right mind cares what advertising creatives in the midst of a self-esteem crisis think.

Anonymous said:

I think it's refreshing to see an ad without the aus cricket team in. Well done, nice work.

Anonymous said:

The whole ad is a technique. And the technique has been done in TV commercials before. So it is not original. And it has nothing to claim except doin it better. Much better.

But what if there was another BIG AD with twice as many people? Or a Bravia ad with bigger flouro balls rolling down hill somewhere?
People would be booing.

I'm torn between embracing it - or dissing it.

Fuck it. I'll never turn to the dark side. I dig it.

Anonymous said:

I'd assumed this was an OS ad.

It's good. Most importantly, beyond the sheer beauty of the idea, is that it is so relevant to the Schwepes brand.

Pretty well a perfect ad.

Anonymous said:

Not sure but I think Pablo Picasso said "if your going to steal something, make sure it's the best one " or something along those lines.

So what, the ad is "influenced" by somewhere or something, does it matter? It's a great ad, nicely shot and well directed.

Ripping won't ever stop in advertising nor should it. I think it's when words like "genius" and "original" are used we need to be cautious.

I feel good ripping may lead you to a Bronze but it will never lead you to a Gold.

Anonymous said:

Hey, I thought all the creative geniuses had left Patts?

But while Clems are doing the appalling National Bank work (and the even worse Blonde stuff), Patts do the very good VB and now this exceptional Schwepes ad.

Whoda thunk it?

Anonymous said:

Where's the plasticine rabbits?

Anonymous said:

would've been better with Andrew Symonds in it though

Anonymous said:

I liked it when i saw it on tv, then the fact it's an ad kind of ruined it at the end.

I will say one thing tho.

It's a teeensy bit highbrow for a fucking fizzy drink.

Anonymous said:

Yeah 1:41, "good ripping may lead you to a Bronze but it will never lead you to a Gold" What on earth are you smoking, brother? remember Honda 'Cog'???

Anonymous said:

So I assume that all the little bitches dissing this ad have much better work than it, on their reels?

Anonymous said:

I'm with 1.41 and 12.33.

I reckon it's darn near perfect. Cog, balls, BIG, Rabbits, gorilla and some stuff the boys did for canon digi a year or two ago - the pixel thingy. They are ads that simply make you want to watch, listen and be entertained.

Pretty harsh to say it's been done.

I'm working on a car spot right now, where an albino pigmy is waxing his balls and humming a linda ronstadt song [Blue Bayou].

I showed the concept to my junior team, they politely said, "Been done. Put a skateboard in it."

Anonymous said:

Is that you Doc? Get back to work you emo lover. TB

Anonymous said:

1:14 If people put their work on the blog they're inviting discussion. If you just want to hear good news only show your ads to your mum.

Anonymous said:

isnt anyone concerned that this is BRAVIA.
