3G IPHONE: WHICH PLAN IS BEST?

Picture 223.pngWho managed to get a 3G iPhone on Friday? If you have bought or are considering buying an iPhone, the big question right now is which network - Optus, Vodafone, Telstra or 3 - to go with and what is the best plan? Is it best to buy outright or on a plan?

telstra is more expensive, but at least you'll get coverage

The bit I don't get is all the nerds lining up for a handset.

If only they had friends to call on their new phone.

Anonymous said:

Voda.

Then you can fold up your girlfriend and put her in your pocket. Optus just lets you hear animals say the word 'yes', which is pretty boring.

Interesting question. I also wouldn't mind hearing people's thoughts on red wine stains on the sofa. Soda water, Febreze or steam clean?

My fear is the iPhone will become the modern-day advertising equivalent of the pony tail.

Stop and think.

My two cents:

I bought a modified Iphone about six months ago.

It was great for showing off in the pub, but it has some MAJOR problems.

Firstly: Most of the cool stuff is via the 'net (internet, maps, youtube etc) and all of the major carriers absolutely rape you the second you get on there - so your bills go ballistic.

Secondly, the screen gets flithy ALL the time, because it's a touch screen - so you're constantly wiping it on your shirt.

Thirdly, look at its size.

It's a phone / hard drive / video player/ camera all in one.

So it's not really a great phone - it's the classic 'jack of all trades - master of none.'

I had constant drop outs - admittedly it was an early model but people didn't sound very clear.

The camera is very low megapixel, so you're a bit buggered there too.

And 8gig? That's nothing.

In conclusion:

The iphone is primarily designed for the yank market. Their phone networks aren't as good as ours, and they don't have the mobile technology we have - they also have much, much better internet plans than ours - they can sit on the net all day if they want and it'll cost them bugger all. The second we get on - Telstra stick it to you.

Wait two years and you'll replace your ipod with this. You'll have an 80gig memory and they would have ironed out all the bugs.

It took them about five years to get the ipod right.

This isn't it ..... yet.

Most nerds have had them for 6 months.

I think the real shock will be the extra data paid for.
Whatever the plan, it's worth looking into which one gives a Data cap or unlimited.
Telstra is pretty renown for screwing ppl in this dept.

Column 8 for that one 9.51.

Anonymous said:

My suggestion is to wait a year for the hype to die down, and with it the cost of both the plans and the phone itself.

Anonymous said:

And we have to remember that '3G' is ultra fast internet - nothing much to do with the phone itself - just the way, and the speed, in which it receives data.

So, again, you'll be able to stream all those 'amusing cat' youtube videos very fast, with a phone bill that goes up even faster.

I've had a 1st gen phone for a while now,and I love it, mainly because I no longer have to carry both a phone and my MP3 player, which was invariably left sitting at home because I couldn't be bother carrying both.

Haven't even bothered setting up a data plan, there's wireless pretty much wherever I go.

Can't be stuffed getting the new version, I've got a GPS, and don't care about 3G. I figure in a year's time they'll release an even better version with 80g if space, so I'll upgrade then.

data usage plans will come down in the coming months. This is the first device that actually makes using the net easy and so as with anything, the price will come down as more users get on board.

I believe optus has the best data plan which brigns me to the fact that lynchy need to make this blog mobile friendly. Lynchy, get your nerds to optimise it now.

Anonymous said:

10:20 - that was extremely comprehensive dude.

Anonymous said:

You thinking of buying one lynchy?

Anonymous said:

My first bill was $1600.

Get a data plan, that's all I can say.

Anonymous said:

Wake up 11.09.... the beauty of the iPhone is that it makes it easy to get on normal netsites so Lynchy doesn't need to optimise the blog.

Thanks mate - and here's an addendum - just for you.

The headphone port is SPECIFIC to the IPhone headphones - ie, those expensive headphones you bought for your Ipod won't work on this thing. You HAVE to use the crappy white ones you get with the phone.

It's another relatively callous Apple money-maker.

I'm sure we'll be seeing all sorts of expensive Iphone Apple 'in-ear' headphones seeping out pretty soon.

Anonymous said:

sry i feel asleep waiting for the mug shot of Moser to load 12:57

trust me, I've been using the iphone for a while, and though 2.5G, an optimised site is surely better.

Anonymous said:

to the person who said their screen gets dirty - get a screen protector. it makes a massive difference, i never have to clean mine.
i have one of the original iphones (bought in the states) and it is great - a pleasure to use.

Anonymous said:

Or stop eating devon.

Anonymous said:

It's just a phone for fuck's sake - stop living vicariously.

Anonymous said:

Says a lot for telco advertising that no-one can work out the best plan.

Anonymous said:

12.58 that's not quite right. Plenty of companies (Belkin for example) have come out with an adapter. Or do what I did, file a bit of the plastic around the bottom of the plug off.

But I agree, it's a stupid design flaw, apparently fixed in the 3G versions.

Anonymous said:

Don't drop it.
Oops! There goes my 'i' life!

Anonymous said:

Go Vodafone.

For no extra charge they let you fold your girlfriend into the phone.

Anonymous said:

That's the real issue here, 1:46.

You need a PHd in Smoke & Mirrors to understand the plans of both phone and electricity providers, and the advertising does nothing to simplify things.

Which of course is exactly what the telcos/power companies want.

I made the switch from Devon to Liverwurst recently and I've never been happier.

Anonymous said:

I went with Optus as I thought they had the best plans and I didn't have to pay anymore than I do now on my current plan...

$89 with no handset payments...$600 in calls and 850mb of data which gives you about 28mb of data a day (=a few youtube videos, all the email you need and plenty of browsing) plus with wifi you can avoid using alot of your plans data.

As long as you get a 3G signal then the speeds are very good, almost like using your broadband at home...

it's def an awesome phone, and although it might not tick all of the boxes it certainly comes close...I wouldn't recommend buying it outright because chances are you'll end up using one of the big three as your carrier and invariably pay them what you would on a plan anyway...

Anonymous said:

DDBullshit Phone!

Anonymous said:

Missed opportunity, 2:54, although I like your sense of the ridiculous.

Devon, Stras or Fritz.

It's the same sausage, just a different name depending on which State of Australia you live in.

Telstra, Optus, Vodafone.

I think you can do the rest of the metaphor.

Anonymous said:

optus were fucked.

they gave me a $500 cap for $79. If I went a dollar over they'd charge me astronomically.

anyway.

breakdown of calls = $500 + GST = $50.
Plus $79.

So in realitiy, you get $500 - $129 worth of calls.

Which is about $370. Go one cent over, and your bill won't be $79. It will be around $400.

Yes, and they use monkeys to sell this shit.

Lynchy, I assume this post was a bait to see how many geeks/digi/ no-ideas (and girlfriend) guys read this site..because it appears to have worked.

It worked, the couldn't help themselves..

Go get my lunch, all of you.

Anonymous said:

1.25 wo wo wooooowww now hold on there big fella. Just cos you have a screen protector does not mean small goods cannot smudge your screen. You sound like a supermarket shaved ham kind of guy to me. You need a trip to Haberfield my friend.

Anonymous said:

So, how are Clemengers going with the Vodafone pitch?

Anonymous said:

I'm wondering if Mr Lynch would like to declare his interest in this post. If this were done in the mainstream media it would be crucified on Mediawatch. It's amusing that all the advertising savvy inhabitants of this place have not been kicking up a stink.....or didn't they notice?

cool kids are waiting for the google phone. without bills.

9:03 PM was this the 'viral' campaign you big hunk of mainstream manliness came up with to sell i-phones?

Anonymous said:

Who gives a toss - have we ever compared Electricity suppliers on this blog.?It's a phone just as exciting as a stapler.

Anonymous said:

I don't know about iphones but my Liverwurst futures have gone through the roof!

Anonymous said:

Apparently since 3 Mobile didnt get the iphone they will be offering an unlock so you can run it on their network - their data prices also seem to be the best comparatively... dunno

Anonymous said:

Don't need an i and everybody else phone.
Hate the bloody thing. Leave me alone.
Not cool.

12:58 and 14:08, yup the 3G model takes normal headphones.

For all those Creative Geniuses worried about paying a fortune on your data plan, if you talk to those Digital Nerds you love to slag off they will show you how to connect to the Free Wi-Fi services you will find dotted around the city.

You know how it's done, pretend your their best mate, get what you need from them to make yourself look good and then drop them like a sack of spuds...oh and don't forget to slag them off on the blog ;-)

What a lot of interesting people you are. Hmm, the i-PHONE and Campaign Brief talking about TELCO CAPS. Seems a tad incongruous. You buy i4i and service caps tooth4tooth. Service and caps are the same for any 3G handset, depending on how stupid you are. I got plenty of after sales shocks with 3 in exactly the same way I would with Telstra, Virgin, Optus or any Operator on any handset. If your phone is your lifestyler, U have 2 use wisely and always be careful with and check data transfer times and do not be fooled into an always on Broadband mentality with your Mobile. But after sales and customer service in the land of phones does have some pretty big issues that the communications industry could help with. When I was lucky enough to use the i-PHONE for a month or so early in 2007, it wasn’t to make calls; but simply to admire and use the screen changer, not even by touch, but a flip of the wrist. For viewing and high definition interactive pleasure I think its boiling hot, (but I was upset it did not shoot video); but for the real pros and cons you should have seen a brilliant and unbiased presentation at this years Mobile Content World by this geezer, Oliver Weidlich of Ideal Interfaces. Also, Alex at Alex Online Dotcom, who is an excellent tech journo and media guy will certainly give you lots of real hard facts and he had an i-PHONE way, way back. But wait, there’s more, if you go to my little 2 minuter, it’ll give you a really nifty welcome i-PHONE screen right at the end, and you can actually read my clip with your barcode readers, since you have all become so nerdy. A lot of phones, probably under the Office folder and possibly under Applications have a Barcode Reader. If you have the beaut Nokia N95, it has one. Open up the camera, hold it steady with the entire code visible on your N95 or other handset screen and you’ll discover a whole new world inside QR Codes. We’ve just added our Datamatrix 2D stuff to this clip, but its only a web address. I would rather you get off more on The Presets guys techno trance remix and not pause the clip to take a barcode reading. (Only Nerds do that, if they’re not already dancing). Get the i-PHONE, you can always pretend its a BlackBerry Rocket Ship. I would not sleep out for one, but I would certainly sleep with one. BEST WISHES-b-boy on international assignment:

Chris B Boys? And you are interesting? Pallleeaase, get off the 'phone!

Anonymous said:

July 14, 2008 12:58 PM, that's the original one with the recessed headphone jack. The 3G one has a standard flush-fit headphone jack, so that's no longer an issue.

Regarding the data issue, early adopters of the original iPhone in the Australian market were going to get raped, as they didn't have much by the way of data limits as they were using a non-iPhone plan.

I have the Optus 3G iPhone plan with 700mb data. That pretty much satisfies my needs.
