AWARDED BBH LONDON CREATIVE TEAM TO PUBLICIS MOJO SYDNEY

Picture 295.pngSteve Wakelam and Ian Williamson, most recently of BBH London, have joined Publicis Mojo Sydney in a continued revamp of the creative department. They bring with them Cannes Gold and Silver and multiple D&AD pencils, including a host of recent global medals for their Levi's spot, 'Dangerous Liaison'.
Before BBH, Williamson worked for WCRS and HHCL in London. Wakeham had previously spent time at D’Arcy and Burnett in the UK as well.
Says Micah Walker, creative director at Publicis Mojo Sydney: “It’s hard to find good teams, and Steve and Ian are a very, very good team. I admired their work while in London and we’re all genuinely excited to have them join us here in Sydney. They could’ve gone about anywhere they wanted."
The pair also seemed keen: “We’re really excited about joining Mojo and believe they’re genuinely striving to do great things. We both admired Micah’s work at Fallon and see this as a great chance to work with someone of his caliber – he’s a brilliant creative but also a really nice bloke. And after meeting Graeme, Darren and Micah we could see that they’re all really committed to making a big difference in the agency and that’s something we want to be involved in. It’s an exciting time at Mojo."
The pair join a number of new faces in the creative department at Mojo since Walker’s arrival from Fallon. Say Walker: “I’m about as impatient as they come, but I feel great about the direction we’re moving in as an agency, and Graeme and Darren have really been supportive in helping make that happen. This next year’s going to be exciting for us."

I think getting everything in writing is a basic that smart creatives always insist on. I don't know an intelligent person in any industry who doesn't.

These guys look pretty clever so probably don't need your inane career advice.

As for 3:27. Do you think talented people wander the world without contracts? Do you actually think lawyers sit in their offices dispensing advice like :

"Mate you don't need anything in writing - you're a genius - only crap people need contracts"

Is that what you actually think??? Do you really believe that an intelligent person would read your little post and think: "hey that guys got a point, I am a the smartest guy here, smart people don't need contracts, what a fool I've been all these years!"

Having worked at Mojo previously (no longer there so have no affiliation) they had a pretty comprehensive contract (largest one I'd seen) that was tight as a drum. Had a lawyer check it out and didn't have to amend a thing. You have to worry more when you've got one piece of paper that doesn't spell anything out.

Wasn't Sydney office but maybe they do it differently there.

I think its great to see some good talent coming to our shores. Hopefully the guys do some great things and inspire us all.

If you're young, successful, well respected by the locals, heavily awarded, working at one of the best agencies in the world, in London and working with some of the best people and the best suppliers in the world. A. Why would you come down to Sydney and...B. Work at Publicis Mojo?

I remember meeting an English team at one of the biggest agencies in NY once. They had been head hunted out of a great agency in London and they said they had spent the last year doing work for research and only produced one radio commercial. On another occasion I met an English team also from a hotshop in London who were working at Goodby in SF. They said they had been there for over a year and couldn't get anything through. They were hired because Goodby liked the lateral work in their book and when they tried to do the same style at Goodby they couldn't even get it out of the agency. Now this doesn't happen to everyone but it sure seems to happen alot.

These guys get caught up in the lifestyle and big bucks and end up risking their careers. And, in alot of cases not being able to get back. Do it later in life but not while you're at the prime of it. IMHO.

Driving to work this morning, I was reflecting on just how cool it is to live and work in a country/city that has good weather, is peaceful, with plenty of open space, great food, air you can breathe, surf beaches within easy distance of your home... and I thought that while we bitch and moan about the state of advertising in oz, there are still plenty of reasons to still try and forge your career here.

Anyone who's ever lived in London on anything less than a shitload of money will understand that a job offer in Sydney isn't the worst thing in the world to happen to you.

You only need to get one good piece of work out a year to be successful. You can do that in London, San Francisco or Buenos Aires. Advertising offers us the chance to sample life in different parts of the world. We're very lucky in that respect. If you're young and single, it's a hell of a lot easier to move abroad now than when you're married and with kids in school.

London is awesome, I've worked there. But it's also expensive, freezing cold and dark in winter, or stifling hot on the overcrowded tube in summer. And work wise, you get your fair share of shit shovelling to do. Believe me, it's not all Sony Balls or Honda Cog. Nowhere is.

Don't question these guys' work ethic just for trying somewhere different. At least they've got the balls to do it. If they were looking to cash in there's a lot of easier places to go to.
