Ogilvy creates a summer bottler for Coca-Cola

COKE-BOTTLE.pngOgilvy Sydney was tasked with celebrating summer with Coca-Cola and open up some happiness. The agency opted to go back to the good old days... big dumb fun, in the spirit of the McCann-Erickson, Sydney spots of the late 70s and this one from 1983.

Like it. Back to the BIG coke ideas of days gone by.

Awesome. Great soundtrack - who's it by?

Great ad. As a Coca-Cola enthusiast, I really like the line also.

I love this. It's not pretentious. It doesn't look as though it's a deliberate award chaser. It's got a big feel, it's fun. Bloody well done. (And no I don't work for Ogilvy). It reminds me of ads from the late '70s to early 80s, which is a good thing. I'd love to know where they did this?

Anonymous said:

How are they powering the fan?

Anonymous said:

I can't say I agree with any of the comments above (from 1.38pm)

The real thing said:

Close to the good old days, they just forgot to name the product or what it does to a thirst. 7 outa 10.

In addition the idea comes straight out of the product. Well done Ogilvy and long live the 70's!!

Anonymous said:

1.38, the fan is gas-powered, obviously.

Bringing back the good old days of Ross Nichols & George Muskins.

Anonymous said:

It doesn't look like a deliberate award chaser.

You can say that again.

Anonymous said:

It's a bit ejaculatory isn't it?

Anonymous said:

Yeah it's awesome. I want to be in that bottle.

Anonymous said:

Love it. And love the 'open happiness' tag. Nice one. Would have been a great shoot!

Steve said:

The original 'Beach Ball' was a fun & sun classic Aussie spot with a giant accessible Coke prop and loose mullet action.
This has an over designed bottle with some sort of bullsh*t magically powered fan to toss around good-looking-only ad people.
It's almost as pretentious as an Absolut rooftop party.
Get some new ideas for fuxsake.

Doddsy said:

I actually recall presenting that very idea to Coke back in the old McCann days after seeing 'Drop Zone'.

It's a funny old world.

Mick said:

looks fake as, to be honest.

that drop would bust bones. Not a fan.

Oh, and what the hell is a "coca-cola enthusiast"?

Anonymous said:

Speaking of Mccann's, there's a link to "Skysurfer" after the jump above.

Can't beat it.

Forget Roscoe and George - this is pure Larry Larsted - the great Coke director of the '70's

Anonymous said:

Would be cool if they actually made one, which wouldn't be that hard, I don't reckon.

Anonymous said:

Jesus, here we go. 1.44 "just forgot to name the product or what it does to a thirst" Are you fucking kidding!? It's a giant Coke bottle, the most recognisable brand on the entire fucking planet - even Kalahari bushmen know it. And if you need to be told what it does to a thirst, you've been sticking it in the wrong hole.
However, what made the older ads cool, was that the giant toys were real, not obvious CGI. Still, takes me back and makes me smile. Dig it.

A good attempt at classic advertising, i enjoyed it's simplicity. Captured the spirit of Coke just fine:)
I agree with you 4.08.

Anonymous said:

Me thirsty.

Anonymous said:

What happens if someone's in the bottle and they turn the fan off? I guess at least it would be the brand colour.

Anonymous said:

I fully agree with 4:08.

For the record, though, I do not condone Coke bottle insertion into any orifice other than the mouth.

The Creative Director said:

4.08, get the fuck out of my office.

Sight & sound said:

4.08, with television, you can communicate with sound too! Fucking moron. You must be an art director.

Ben said:

Are you all on Coke? It's spectacularly shit. It looks like a promo vid for a christian rock festival.

Good one Ben ... have you made anything better???

Anonymous said:

Got a great summer feel. Awesome slow mo shots. Nice.

Sweet spot! ARRH ARRH ARRH

Anonymous said:

Yeah Ben, I've seen your work and you'd be lucky to come up with something half as good as that.

Anonymous said:

Superb. Happy. Ingenious.Trendsetting.

Anonymous said:

10:56 you wanna hope it's not Ben Coulson or Ben Couzens

Anonymous said:

I'd have to agree.
I just like it.
Fun, great track, not trying too hard.

Anonymous said:

He's the Ben that talks to the talk but wanks the walk.

Anonymous said:

it's not going to trouble any award shows but it's a bunch of good fun for one of the toughest briefs (actually read that as 'toughest clients') that comes up every year. Nicely edited, cast and directed... but the star of the show is the music. Best composition on an aussie ad for a very long time.

I'm loving it.

yet another ben.......... said:

Simple, fun to shoot and would look nice on a big telly.

What's the problem?

Anonymous said:

I've seen KFC ads better than this!

This Ben said said:

Good there are a bunch of whingers. This ad ain't going to save lives, but fark, what's wrong with just having a little bit of fun every now and then!
