Says Margaret Zabel, CEO of The Communications Council: "Although the Social Media Code of Conduct has been in progress for the past year, we feel the launch comes at a particularly pertinent time. This month's controversial ruling from the Advertising Standards Bureau is a timely reminder of the developing landscape of communications and our legal and ethical accountabilities.

"Consumers are increasingly seeking transparency from brands, and clients are looking for ways to monitor and minimise legal risk on social media channels, so it has never been more important to have a set of guidelines in place to minimise the risk of social media engagement harming your organisation, client or employee's reputation."

To officially launch the Code, TCC's Digital Committee is holding a Social Media Legal Seminar to educate businesses about the potential issues, opportunities and pitfalls they face in the developing area of marketing communications.

The seminar, entitled Risk Management and Legal Compliance in Social Media, will be led by solicitor Stephen von Muenster, who will share his expertise on how to manage risk and adapt with the inevitable changes ahead.

Says Iain McDonald, chairman of the Communications Council Digital Committee: "This specialised training will provide guidance on the management of social media for brands from both a legal perspective and that of a practical application for effective marketing communications."

The Code has been released in beta version and is intended to evolve alongside changing standards and practice. The Communications Council encourages businesses to adapt the Code of Conduct to suit their needs, include it in employee handbooks and, if they already have one, use the Code as a cross reference.
