Way To Blue launches social conversation analysis of Oscars Awards and Ceremony – Aussie predictions not far off the mark

Aus predict.jpgIt’s one of the most talked about events of the year. Australian social media users were nearly there, but only British users were talking about the right winners of last night’s 85th Academy Awards.

Over one million social media mentions were analysed over seven days by leading global film communications company Way To Blue who found out which countries correctly predicted the four winners of the big four Awards (Best Director, Film, Actor and Actress).

oscarsinfographiclogo.jpgA huge 72 per cent of Australian social media users either correctly predicted or wanted Daniel Day Lewis to win his third Oscar for Best Actor, whilst 29 per cent were backing Jennifer Lawrence for Best Actress and another 36 per cent backed Ang lee for Best Director. Best Film was the only incorrect guess, with Lincoln sitting at 14 per cent.

The French were the worst backers, as social media users got three out of the four predictions wrong. They correctly backed Daniel Day Lewis for Best Film. Their downfall was their unsurprisingly backing for Amour, as they backed Michael Hanneke (66 per cent), Emmanuelle Riva (64 per cent) and Amour (51 per cent) to sweep the board at the Awards.

The fashion King and Queen of the red carpet were revealed as Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lawrence. Over the duration of the awards, Jennifer Lawrence and her beautiful (but hazardous) dress got a staggering 167,305 mentions on social media, whilst Ben Affleck’s slick suit received 56,071 mentions.

Says Daniel Heale, associate director of Social Media at Way To Blue: “Internationally, we have seen more awards buzz than ever on social media platforms this year and for last nights Academy Awards ceremony British audiences called it exactly right for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor in a leading role and Best Actress in a leading role.

“But we all know the outfits are almost as important as the awards and Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lawrence didn’t just pick up a golden statuette each last night. Analysis of social media found that they were the most positively praised celebrities in terms of fashion on the red carpet – the true king and queen of the Oscars.”
