In a world where kids think cotton comes from an animal and yoghurt grows on trees, dirtgirlworld keeps kids in touch with where real food comes from in the new app created via Whybin\TBWA\Digital Arts Network (DAN).

The creator, Cate McQuillen believes in kids getting grubby, getting outside and that technology innovation can be used to get kids off the couch and out the door. Dirtgirlworld has therefore grown beyond TV and into mobile and apps and digital content.

Through the collaboration with Digital Arts Network (DAN), a division of Whybin\TBWA Group Australia, this belief in technology innovation has been brought to life through the creation of the app, which through augmented reality, allows dirtgirl to appear in people’s gardens and teach kids how to grow and prepare their own food.

The dirtgirlworld app allows kids and parents to interact with the star of the show, a virtual dirtgirl, who appears in people’s gardens through the iPhone camera screen. By pointing the iPhone or iPad camera at special markers found within the packets of lettuce, tomato and sunflower seeds, dirtgirl will pop up and become people’s garden companion.

Says McQuillen: “The whole dirtgirlworld digital realm is distinctive because its inviting kids to use technology to get outside and get grubby. It was an unbelievable honour to be standing alongside the best of the best in the world when it comes to digital content.”

dirtgirlworld brought home the only Digital Emmy for Australia this year.
