CommBank launches new website to lead multi-vendor strike team with Google + Adobe via VML
The new CommBank website is the first re-design in 7 years. CBA have partnered with digital agency VML to lead a multi-vendor strike team including Google and Adobe to deliver a truly world class banking website.
The new site delivers a fully responsive design so that users across desktop, tablet and mobile all receive the best possible experience for their device, along with a new utility navigation designed to simplify and speed up access to the most commonly used features, with the site also continually learning about a user’s behaviour to deliver a very personalised content experience.
VML Australia’s managing director and creative head, Aden Hepburn says it was a huge undertaking to deliver a world class multi-device responsive experience, but something very special and extremely rewarding to be part of.
Says Hepburn: “CommBank isn’t just the #1 Bank in Australia, it’s one of the top few in the world, so we started by assembling a bespoke team utilising VML’s best talent from both Australia and across the globe to ensure we could deliver the world class digital experience you’d expect from the Commonwealth Bank.
The new CommBank site had to be responsive and it had to be best in class, if not the world. So what you’ll see is an experience you wouldn’t normally expect from a bank. And that’s exciting.
What’s more, is the experience of partnering with a business like CommBank that is now digital at its core, they have an all-star cast internally and when brands and agencies connect like that, anything is possible, it has been an amazing experience” he said.
The new website is a year in the making, and again positions CBA as clear digital leaders in the banking sector, building off it’s market leadership with Apps like Kaching and retail point of sale device Albert, sporting smartphone type capabilities to deliver an enhanced POS experience for customers.
CBA general manager for Online Banking, Drew Unsworth, says partnering with VML brought a new level of digital excellence to their range of partners;
Says Unsworth: “CommBank.com.au is one of Australia’s most visited websites and it’s therefore essential that it connects with consumers more directly to give them greater control and access to information that enables them to make informed financial decisions that are relevant to the life stage they are at. What’s more this experience needs to be tailored to their needs, serving content that’s applicable to them and not a ‘one size fits all approach.:
The Commonwealth Bank partnership showcases VML Australia’s enterprise level capabilities, thought leadership and experience, whilst VML continues to bring a new level of digital capability to the local market since launching just over a year ago, with a score card of continuous big wins, exponential growth, strategic partnerships and innovative work, positioning it as one of the biggest and best digital agencies in the market in just over 12 months of operations in Australia.
VML now boasts one of the most impressive client rosters in the country, including Emirates, Revlon, NRL, Kellogg, LG, Jurlique, ASICS, Coates Hire, News Limited, NSW Government, Colgate, Dick Smith, Rip Curl and Pernod Ricard amongst others.

Bad design work in terms of usability/functionality. The panel to the right is the last to load but also where logins for users are situated having to expand the panel everytime is inconvenient. The rest of the homepage content is rather big ads and do not really serve it’s purpose as carousels are usually missed by the viewer when automatically rotating. Visually it looks great and on brand. But definitely hate how it works, the blue selected state for buttons is also ugly IMO.
Shame their blog isn’t responsive
The site is broken on the navigation drop downs. Might want to look into that.
As a daily (at least) CBA website user the new design seems all about pushing ads and not letting me log in quickly. Agree with Don Li – why is the log in feature the last to load…
The photos are pretty but the navigation to content hasn’t exactly improved.
I’m on 3G and downloading 1.3 megabyte for the home page is very slow. Surely there’s a way to optimise the site to make it more responsive on mobile phones.
I agree with Don, waiting for the login to load is a pain and sometimes it doesnt even pop out. @3G the site loads slowly because it is downloading both mobile and desktop images even if you are only on a mobile. Thats pretty sloppy dev. Plus the nav is broken too.
Peoples choice credit union have a far superior working website with 1/100 the budget!
Saved previous payments, frustrates the hell out of me.
A website that frequently pisses me off is my summary.
