MOVING PARTS

A darkly comic thriller about men, estrangement, secrets and forgiveness.

COLIN FRIELS + JOSH McConville

Written by DAVID NOBAY

Directed by STEVE ROGERS

Production Company: Will O_Rourke

Moving Parts is a 2-hander, a darkly comic thriller, set in an exclusive London shop, where a young man consults a salesman, in his quest for the perfect watch. Their discussion about the perfect timepiece becomes a fight to reconcile past, present and future. It is a story that takes us deep into the heart of the human condition, on a journey into a relationship that has broken.

Moving Parts is the first stage play written by David Nobay, creative chairman of Droga5 Australia. Nobay has been ranked by Campaign Brief magazine as the No.1 most awarded Creative Director in Australasia and also included in AdAge magazine’s prestigious ‘Creativity 50’ most influential creative leaders in the world.

The play will be directed by Steve Rogers, one of the most sought after commercial directors internationally (consistently ranked in Top 10 directors worldwide), creating work for clients including James Boag’s, Nike and Dodge among countless others. He has also directed music videos for the likes of Radiohead, Malcolm McLaren and Jack Ladder.

“We have been developing this new Australian play for over 3 years” says producer, Michael Ritchie. “We aim to bring a new writer’s voice to the Australian stage, with a unique team, drawn from the Australian theatre and film industries. As a new company, Will O’Rourke is looking for new ways of combining arts and business strategies, bringing together unique teams of creative professionals, to engage audiences in new and exciting ways.”

The play will take one of Australia’s best known actors Colin Friels, plus Josh McConville, back to the place where they both trained, NIDA. It will be Friels’ first performance at NIDA since graduating in the 1970s. McConville, a 2008 graduate, has worked extensively in Australian theatre and won the 2013 Sydney Theatre Award for Best Actor, for his leading performance in The Boys (2012). He won Best Actor at the 2013 Green Room Awards, for his portrayal of Mark Rothko in Red (MTC).

Friels says of Moving Parts: “I like being involved in new things, I love new material. I’m always attracted to it, like a magpie… I thought it was extremely good and extremely well written.”
