Schweppes launches ‘The Pub with no Beer’ – a three part online series via GPY&R Melbourne
What would happen if you turned the beer taps off in a 100-year-old Aussie pub? That’s exactly what Schweppes and GPY&R Melbourne have aimed to find out in “The Pub With No Beer”, a three part online series that dared to do the unthinkable.
Created as part of the Cocktail Revolution, the Pub with No Beer series explores how Schweppes attempts to encourage their toughest customer, the beer lovin’ Aussie, to try something different. Be it a Fluffy Duck, a Mojito or even a Scotch and Soda, Schweppes wanted to liberate people from their boring drinking routines.
The first step was convincing the Publicans at the Old Hepburn Hotel in Victoria to turn off the beer taps for one day, something that had never happened in over 100 years. In return, Schweppes would provide all the tools, ingredients and training needed to make cocktails for their thirsty customers.
The Pub With No Beer perfectly captures the reactions of the colourful local regulars, bar staff and a visiting Bikie Gang, when they find out their usual stubby has been replaced with a freshly made cocktail. And best of all, we think some may have even been converted into mixed drink aficionados.
Says Hanan Eissa, senior brand manager at Schweppes: “It’s a bit scary, knocking back a bikie when they ask for a beer – but we had some fun with this series – convincing the punters to mix it up with some new flavours and break their boring, beer habit for a day.”
The campaign will launch on Wednesday 24th July, and the weekly episodes can be viewed at www.cocktailrevolution.com.au.

Trying to be a beer alternative. Well that is orginal. Sadly, this falls pretty flat.
Overbeer?
Anyone
This is advertising creativity at its most selfless.
You write yourself a trip to the middle of fucking nowhere and deliberately make it impossible to get a beer.
Kudos.
Epic fail.
I’m going back to Kokomo.
Brilliant! Somehow on our travels we ended up there…and they told us the story, and we watched the ads. Then the locals turned up. Yep, the blokes from the ads. This is real, no actors. Just a genuine pub doing something scary. What a hoot! I had a chat at the bar with an old, grizzled mountain type bloke, then one who drank a Fluffy Duck in the ad, and he got me to try one too.
In years to come this will be recognised as a classic.
Not a boring, fake, pretentious pub.
Not a boring, fake, ad.
