Coca-Cola launches contentious ‘Grandpa’ spot as part of balanced diet awareness initiative
Coca-Cola in the UK has launched ‘Grandpa’, a new spot highlighting the lifestyle enjoyed by our grandparents — moving more, eating well, taking it easy — can be beneficial.
The Grandpa spot was created by David The Agency, Buenos Aires and uses a nostalgic ‘then and now’ split screen to deliver the story line. The spot has already sparked debate amongst health advocates and marketing commentators who are questioning the validity of the spots ‘Coke based diet’ theme. The classic ‘It’s Not Unusual’ by Tom Jones accompanies the visuals.
Says Coca-Cola’s official press: “The new Coca-Cola advert ‘Grandpa’ shows that the lifestyle enjoyed by our grandparents — moving more, eating well, taking it easy — can be beneficial. We’re committed to using our advertising to raise awareness of the importance of energy balance and helping people to make informed choices. We believe it is just one of the ways we can help make more people aware of the need for a balanced diet and active, healthy lifestyle.”

This makes me feel fuckin’ sick.
All those Coke drinking Grandpas with Diabetes, obesity, and no teeth thank you Coca Cola for reminding us who helped us to a better old age.
Couldn’t disagree more. Coca-Cola promoting healthy living could be tricky, but this makes perfect sense. In a world of fad diets, this cuts through the complication with an old school philosophy. It’s all about living healthy in everything you do (which doesn’t have to be excessive) and enjoying some of the good stuff every now and then. Everything is moderation, even moderation.
Save Our Souls from Ourselves.
Sugar kills more people every day than heroin, automobiles, or acts of violence, and the company most associated with the delivery of sugar is Coke.
The others are in prisons around the world, and this lot are happily telling us that they’ve been doing their poisonous deed for generations, and they’re being celebrated for it.
‘It’s not unusual’, but that doesn’t mean it’s ok.
Um… Why wasn’t that Grandpa chain smoking, bathing in DDT, licking lead paint, inhaling asbestos, spreading lard onto toast, regularly fist fighting, spraying agent orange onto civilians, picking fights with the army/riot cops, picking fights with other nations and then shooting machine guns at them, never practising safe sex, driving without a seatbelt while under the influence, or eating red meat 3 meals a day? Pretty sure that’s what Grandpa’s used to do, drinking Coke was probably actually one of the healthier things.
fuck you guys.
Grandpa was cool. Way cooler than all these fucking hipster types you see prancing around these days.
He fought tyranny and built stuff with his hands.
And he drank coke. From glass bottles that needed a bottle opener to get open.
What have you ever done.
@Bullshit, awesome comment.
