McCann executive creative director John Mescall tells Melbourne like it is at MADC event in St Kilda

MADC4.jpgThanks to the Melbourne Advertising and Design Club, John Mescall (left) ECD of McCann, bared his advertising soul to a full house at “The Local” in St Kilda last week. Mescall was at his insightful, clever and acerbic best as he shared his views of the industry.

Entitled A Life in Advertising – The  Ugly and Beautiful Truths, it was an engrossing look at the best and worst of adland and despite some often very funny digs, it was the good stuff that had Mescall most enthused. Amongst some fascinating revelations, such as the story of the alcoholic English teacher who taught him to write, he had plenty of wisdom to impart.

As hungry today as he was when he first started, it was Mescall’s passion that clearly stood out and he summed things up neatly when aligning advertising creatives with uni students. Whilst the casual nature of the job and the freedom is fantastic, the downside is you get exams every day of the week. Given McCann’s incredible haul of awards this year one would have to say he’s still getting straight A’s.
