Former Melbourne art director Jay Hynes switches from ad maker to image maker

JayHynesCB_1.jpgAfter art directing at some of Melbourne’s largest agencies: George Patts, Grey, AJF, Cummins Nitro, Clemenger, Leo Burnetts, Mojo and CHE – Jay Hynes has switched to the other side of the camera and is now working as a full time photographer.

His dedication to photography was sparked in 2001 while at George Patts, where he was a finalist in the Yellowglen young photographers award. As a result his portrait, ‘father and son’ was exhibited Australia wide.

JayHynesCB_2.jpgOver the past 5 years, still hard at it as an art director, he carefully built up a large portrait and music portfolio that found him shooting major international bands and performing artists like Radiohead, Kanye West and Metallica.

Hynes’ drive is to find the balance between commercial work, while continuing to respond to the demand for his JayHynesCB_3.jpgportraits that capture some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry.

Another noted project is his CherryRock Festival exhibitions which features his striking portraits covering the entire walls of AC/DC Lane in the city for a week following each festival. This is now a bi-annual event.

Backed with 12 years of art directing Hynes knows only to well what makes a shot work its arse off for advertising purposes. If there’s talent involved he gets the best from them, creating images that can’t be ignored.

Recent projects include work for Cricket Australia for GPY&R, Heinz Big Red for BD Network, the very first Australian cover for Heavy Magazine and The Paper Kites latest album cover.

You can find Hynes working out of Decent Exposure studio in Prahran, and when the project requires works with photographic producer, Cecelia Bedford. He’ll be doing the rounds in the coming weeks and you can check out his work at jayhynes.com.
