Jungleboys’ Van Vuuren Bros direct new Old Spice spots for its launch in Australia and NZ
UPDATED TO INCLUDE NZ SPOT
Jungleboys directing duo The Van Vuuren Bros. have directed the latest Old Spice online films that launch Old Spice in Australia. The spots feature the ridiculously handsome Isaiah Mustafa who flew to Australia for the shoot.
The Van Vuuren Bros. wrote the scripts, working directly with Hausmann Communications, Proctor & Gamble’s PR company.
Says Alex Hay, EP at Jungleboys: “These spots originated as short pieces of PR content but morphed into something bigger once the Van Vuuren Bros. wrote the scripts. We had only 6 hours of shooting time with Isaiah, on top of this full edits had to be turned around by 7am the morning after the shoot. I think the spots stand up on their own but when you take all the extra factors into consideration, the guys did an amazing job.”
Says Christiaan Van Vuuren, one half of the Van Vuuren Bros. says: “It was amazing to spend a full day hanging around such an attractive, naturally athletic alpha male. It made me realise how geneticlly inferior I am. Sometimes working with really beautiful people can get a bit awkward, because you can’t hide your attraction to them, but Isaiah was so beautiful that I knew I would never have a chance with him. He was at least four to five times above my level of good-lookingness.”

Trying very hard……..
overdone, overblown. I would have done it different. Shame you couldn’t afford me.
Even standing on the shoulders of W+K they still don’t see further than their own noses. The pacing is off and it had two endings, just in case someone didn’t get the joke….a bit like his statement above
Enough already!
Really shows their is just pure magic coming out of W+K. It’s a shame, as the VV Bros have been on a role lately
Seems like tried to pack too many jokes and wordplay. But still made me laugh.
A little to heavy on the crazy wordplay and re-hashed jokes, but still made me laugh for the most part (especially the rugby kick in the Kiwi version).
Could cut 25 secs out. Soooooooooooo drawn out for no good reason.
Really wanted to like this.
But it was horrible.
Oh dear. So, instead of talking to women, he’s talking to men, and instead of being the man your man could smell like, he just talks about how awesome Aussie men already are. Seems like someone forgot the/a strategy.
The edit has suffered so much from this turn around time. A clear example as to why you shouldn’t cut corners when the project gets to post.
You know what’s super fun? Telling people what I don’t like about their work, whilst simultaneously working really hard to make something that won’t get torn apart by my colleagues when it gets posted on an industry blog.
When I was a landscaper I always wished there was a blog where other landscapers could post photos of the walls they built, and I could tell them how their walls weren’t straight, or how I could have built them better… that would have made me feel so good… especially if I had no intimate understanding of the materials they had access to, or the budget they were working with.
Personally I reckon it’s a really nice wall. Well done to everyone involved and thanks to all the labourers for the massive effort on the 6 hour day – building not just one, but three walls, and finishing them all that night, for inspection the following day. It’s an effort you can all be very proud of.

i guess the issue is, when someone is consistently building the best walls in the world, and then all of a sudden, their new wall is only good, not great, the public will become disappointed.
I personally agree, given the budget and time, you’ve done a good job, but consumers aren’t aware of any of the limitations advertisers and brands face.
No one should ever have agreed to the deliverables, for one of the best advertising brands, under such constraints.
But you’re right, people on here are fucked. Keep up the funny.

Well said Christiaan.
@CVV.
Forum boards are the outlet of anonymous know-it-all wannabes. Its way easier to shit on someones work with a few keystrokes than go out and do something yourself. Your dealing with holier-than-though eggheads on this page mate, dont sweat it.
Christiaan Van Vuuren
I think you did a great Job lad. Working under those delivery pressures is insane.
Props.
There’s no moss on your walls fella. Don’t sweat the ‘bricks’, ‘pointing’ their fingers, ‘troweling’ the interwebs for stuff to hate!
Sorry but it was just completely un-funny.
Production values added to the pain. Sounds like it’s in an empty studio and shot and edited like an insurance commercial.
Condolences to those involved.
Tired. This commercial. This idea. This conversation about both on this blog.
Why does every good idea in the media, any medium, advertising, entertainment, get beat to death with repetition, until at the last dying gasp of being able to flog what was once interesting and funny, along comes the lowest common denominator of practitioners, at the bottom of the industry, at the edge of the world to try and squeeze blood out of what has become a turnip.
It’s like the limbo, constantly lowering the bar, and perpetually finding the next fool who will try to go beneath it.
This should surely put a stake in the heart of Old Spice now, shouldn’t it?
Bring a nice idea to Australia and see what happens…
Well done. Don’t worry about negs. The vid made it’s way onto my facebook feed a few times over the weekend. Plenty of organic likes, shares and tags happening on the local facebook page. Comments seem to read overwhelmingly positive. http://www.facebook.com/OldSpiceAUNZ

I just think it’s hilarious that Proctor & Gamble are launching this now. What complete marketing fucktards. You had your chance to capitalise on this… How many years ago now?
The problem here is Proctor & Gamble and their PR agency. Chistiaan it’s not your fault mate. This unfortunately off strategy. And that’s funny in itself. (Marketing mistake no.2)
Ps. W+K don’t have a week on this stuff. They respect advertising and the process. So they don’t end up with genius by default.
It’s a regional ad. With regional gags. It’s great. Really well written and I laughed out loud. Boys you did your job. Well done.
Maybe when some of these haters have a comedy series on the ABC and millions of hits on youtube they are allowed to have an opinion. But until then….
Well done CVV’s top work.
