Two guys, both named Andrew, have this week thrown open the doors of Pencil&Pixel, a new advertising and creative offering specialising in fashion and retail.

The pair – Andrew Henderson (long-time creative director of David Jones) and Andrew Williams (former founding MD of DDB Shop in Melbourne) have been close friends, colleagues and department store foes (DJs v Myer at the height of the so called ‘store wars’) for the best part of 20 years.

Together they bring a perfect storm of retail and fashion experience and expertise to the new agency, based in both Sydney and Melbourne, which will follow the mantra ‘Ideas, Handmade’.

Each have been at the forefront of market-leading retail marcomms both agency and client-side and intrinsically understand the complexities of ASX-listed retail businesses from the very core. Henderson as David Jones’ creative director – embedded as CD at Saatchi & Saatchi and from 2010, M&C Saatchi. Williams has worked on a range of retail business as DDB Shop MD.

Williams said their approach would be a collaborative one. Says Williams: “Working with a range of brand and retail partners as a full service creative and strategic agency. We have the specialist experience, the know-how to deliver in both new and traditional media.”

Henderson called Pencil&Pixel “an exciting opportunity to bring together a lifetime of ‘creative doing’ all in one place”.

Says Henderson: “To build an agency, and bring the focus back to outstanding work that shapes brands is unbelievably energizing. While process and efficiency are all a given, we’ll differentiate with a focus on crafted-creative that inspires”.

The agency has a number of launch clients that it will be in the position to announce in coming weeks.

Both Andrews said they could not have chosen a more suitable business partner.

Henderson described Williams’ retail acumen as second to none: “We’ve known and worked with each other forever, and our business experience is a mirror of one another. We love and live retail and bring the grunt of our combined experience to the table.”

Williams noted Henderson’s world class creative credentials. Says Williams: “His personal portfolio illustrates his ability to manage scale and creative complexity with ease. As a retail art director he is unmatched and over the years his work was even often cited by my former retail clients as their required benchmark.”
