Tropfest 2.jpegClemenger BBDO Melbourne senior account director Jack White (left) has won Tropfest 2014 with his dark comedy, Granny Smith.

Written together with his mate and director, Julian Lewis (right), the short film details the lengths a bloke will go to in order to avoid turning up to work with a hangover – including faking his grandmother’s death. White stars in the movie alongside Steve Vizard.

Says Paul McMillan, managing director, Clemenger BBDO, Melbourne: “We’re really proud of Jack and all the team that were involved in making the film. It’s clear that Jack’s creative talents extend far beyond the walls of Clemenger. We look forward to seeing his next cinematic masterpiece.”

This morning, The Sydney Morning Herald summed up the film:

“This year’s winner of Tropfest provided it in spades. If laughs were quantifiable then Granny Smith would have won the award by a mile.

“I’ve got to go to some lady’s funeral and pretend I am her grandson,” is how Lucas summed up the hilariously painful narrative.”

Tropfest, which began in a cafe in Sydney in 1993, is now the largest film festival of its kind in the world. This year, more than 600 entries were submitted and all had to contain the signature object — a mirror — and be seven minutes in length. Despite extreme weather conditions on Sunday night, Sydneysiders sat through the rain and lightning to watch the 16 finalist films battle it out.
