Vale Forrest Long: former Y&R Sydney creative director who was inducted into the Copywriter’s Hall of Fame for having co-created the UNCF line – A Mind Is A Terrible Thing to Waste
Those at Y&R Sydney in 1975 and part of 1976 would remember the agency’s creative director Forrest Long, who sadly passed away recently in New York.
Says friend and former colleague Geoff Stevenson: “The people I remember at Y&R at that time are Warwick Majcher, David Morris, Dennis Hearfield, Chris Burgess, Phil Putnam, John Marles, Phil Atkinson, Paul Figg, Ali Moss (I think she was there), Margie Thomas (Dean’s wife) and John Lambert.
“I’ve stayed in contact with Forrest since then and caught up with him in New York this time last year. Just received an email from his wife saying Forrest passed away suddenly a few weeks ago and I figured the folks who knew him might like to know.
“Forrest is in the Copywriter’s Hall of Fame for having co-created the line – A Mind Is A Terrible Thing to Waste for the UNCF. He was a delightful guy and I had a forty years friendship with him.”

Forrest was my cousin whom I had not seen since I was a very young girl. I have also lost track of Sam and Sandra, his younger twin siblings, and my only other two cousins. I kept thinking someday I’ll reconnect with him, but someday has come and gone, and it saddens me.
