Beer heads north for inspiration in Great Northern’s new spot via Clems Melbourne
Queensland is the star of a new television campaign via Clemenger BBDO Melbourne for the beer which started in the Sunshine state and is now growing across the country, Great Northern.
Beautiful shots from various Queensland locations showcase the envious lifestyle you only find in the great north according to Carlton & United Breweries (CUB).
The Beer from Up Here campaign was filmed in various spots, including Davies Creek Falls in Mareeba, Barron River at Big Sands, Upper and Lower Mossman Gorge at Mossman and the Daintree River Mouth, Port Douglas.
CUB’s Marketing Director Richard Oppy said the new commercial also features music from Australia’s Israel Cannan.
Says Oppy: “We’re proud to have this track by Israel on the spot – it’s nice to be able to support great Australian talent and there’s no doubt the song fits perfectly with the feel of this commercial and the beer.”
The piece follows eight mates sharing a six-pack across several idyllic spots; using a little ingenuity they float the beer down a river to one another.
Says Oppy: “We love the scenery and the shots are just beautiful; it’s the perfect way to let more people know about the ‘beer from up here’ and what it’s all about.
“The images also reflect the great northern lifestyle so well; something this brand has always done in advertising and promotions.
“It’s great to be able to share this commercial and tell even more people about Great Northern Super Crisp right across Australia.”
Clemenger BBDO creative director, Evan Roberts, said the setting certainly helped his team create some beautiful imagery.
Says Roberts: “This is a simple story of a few mates sharing some beers, in some of the most phenomenal landscapes far north Queensland has to offer.”
Great Northern Super Crisp was launched across the country in early 2015; it taps into the trend of men and women looking for lighter, less bitter brews. Great Northern original was first launched five years ago and was developed in Queensland for the unique QLD lifestyle and climate.

Nice way to pay it forward.
Did the client who bought good stuff at CUB leave a while back?
i love it.
But as a beer drinker i can’t do the maths on this, “eight mates sharing a six-pack”
I still love it though.
If this is what Australian beer advertising has come to, from the best beer advertising agency in Australia, on what was one of the best beer clients in the world, then I don’t want to live in this country anymore.
nice concept, but a little bit ‘classic aussie cheese’ when it comes to the casting & execution…
Beautiful spot. Wish it was on my reel.
I’m sure Clem’s know this, but maybe the client doesn’t.
Earnest beer ads are about as interesting as getting stuck next to an ‘experience collector’ at a party.
If there’s one ingredient in a great beer ad, it’s humour. All the memorable, great beer ads have it.
It’s bloody beer FFS, I don’t want to feel depressed watching an ad about it. It should remind me of how fun it is to drink, not bore the life out of me.
What happened to finding a truth? Nice locations, nicely shot, but that’s about it.
… and I’m not talking about the beer.
Nice work Clems.
ZZZZzzzzz
Would a six pack of beer actually float?
i like this joe. fucking looks great.
oh hi evan
A poignant reminder of how littered many of our waterways are…
I’d like to know where that sandy bank is on the river where those people are camping, I can imagine having a quiet beer there I’m sold!
