Tiger Beer partners with local artists to launch ‘Woks of Art’ from streets of Singapore
Tiger Beer has partnered with curator James Dive from the Glue Society, to transport barely-cooled woks from the streets of Singapore and transform them into ‘Woks of Art’ in bars across Sydney.
The iconic Asian beer is challenging the common misconception that Singapore’s culture is clinical, polished and strict. Select artists were given real woks collected from the hawker markets and back laneways of the city, to use as canvasses for unique, vibrant artworks. Woks of Art celebrates Singapore’s energetic and vivid streets and showcases the true dynamic ethos of the birthplace of Tiger Beer.
Purposely repurposed from their usual home of bustling hawker centres, blazing flames and bursting flavours, each wok has a unique story to tell. The dazzling ‘Woks of Art’ collection is now on display for everyone to discover, across five popular bars in Sydney; Surly’s, Soda Factory, Royal Albert Hotel, Earl’s Juke Joint and The Village Inn, until the end of March.
Woks of Art is part of a wider project that repurposes real items from the streets of Singapore, including shutters, room dividers, crates and tiles, into unique décor for the bars of Sydney.
Escorted by local guide Anthony K, Dive searched the hawker laneways of Singapore to find a number of pieces, including 20 authentic woks for the project, approaching street food vendors and sourcing the sizzling vessels straight off the flame. Listening to their anecdotes, Dive gifted fresh woks to the chefs, offering them the opportunity to create new stories for the years to come.
20 graphic artists, painters and sculptors from Australia and New Zealand, have transformed the woks into compelling artworks, inspired by the bustling crowds, food hawker vendors, passionate chefs and intense heat of Singapore.
Says Dive: “When Tiger approached me I thought the project was really unique. Which as it turned out was quite like Singapore. Going to Singapore, walking the bustling streets every night, hanging out and cooking with the vendors, and very carefully walking off with over twenty still very hot woks gave me a great sense of a place that is full of life.
“As a canvas the woks are exciting, they are old, dented, and full of character. Rather than being a blank canvas each wok has a patina that talks of years of use, years of flame, basically telling a story before our artists even lift their brush.”
To complement the ‘Woks of Art’, Tiger Beer is uncaging the streets of Singapore by bringing over to Sydney the hidden, authentic and raw culture of what’s commonly known as the ‘Garden City’ piece by piece, transforming traditional shutters to signage, woks to tap handles and lighting, tiles to coasters and crates to seats across bars in Sydney.
Born in Singapore and raised on the streets, Tiger Beer is known for its full-bodied and refreshing taste with a bite. Since 1932 at the Alexandra Road brewery where there was no refrigeration, Tropical Lagering was created to withstand the humidity of Singapore and the heat of its spicy street food, keeping the clean and crisp beer fresher for longer.
To celebrate ‘Woks of Art’, Tiger Beer will be giving everyone the chance to win a trip to Singapore for two, where they will be guided through the hawker markets and back laneways of the vivid city, to discover the real Singapore and the birthplace of Tiger Beer. Entrants simply need to snap a picture of their favourite piece from the ‘Woks of Art’ and upload to Instagram tagging #TigerWokArt whilst enjoying a refreshing Tiger Beer, to be in with a chance to win.

This looks a lot like the idea you present when you don’t have an idea – ‘We’ll get an artist to create something tangentially related to our product.’ Also, food pairing is a hardcore bunch of balls. As if you’d not drink whatever piss was at hand because it didn’t match the entree or some guff. Wank on, attenders of Art Bars, wank on.
I agree with Palm Sugar.
This Artist card draw is way overused.
BOOOORing.
