Justin Drape: Camera roll from Carlton Cannes

Cannes is inspiring in many ways – the work, some of the industry legends that you see and meet, the speakers past and present (think Lou Reed, Spike Jonze, Vivienne Westwood, Alejandro González Iñárritu and Anna Wintour).

This year, I’ve also been inspired by my fellow jurors. One of the great pleasures, and privileges, of judging at a show like this, is getting to know the people you share a dark room with for many days – in this case six.

As you can see in the pic below, the room often resembles a United Nations forum, and this year we have representatives from Brazil, the UK, UAE, Belgium, Canada, Sweden, The Netherlands, France, Japan, Spain, Norway, USA, South Africa, India, Argentina, Norway, Mexico, Russia, Italy… and Australia.

pic two.jpgDuring the course of each day the experience fluctuates between cultural insights, nuances, understanding etiquette, conflict, competition, generosity and insightful points of view on the work; sometimes ending with fine conversation, food and wine.

We have some extremely talented folks on the film jury this year, including Sophia pic three.jpgLindholm from Forsman Bodenfors (one of the creative minds behind Volvo Epic Split, Volvo Live Test and SK-II’s latest global #changedestiny campaign), Andreas Dahlqvist from Grey New York (VW Fun Theory, Direct TV, Guns with History pop up store) and our jury president Joe Alexander from The Martin Agency (Geico ‘Unskippable’ ad). So if your work happens to make the shortlist from 2,783 entries, it’s an admirable achievement.

And it may soon go on to win a lion and inspire others for many years to come.
