Ex agency CD Skip Waterhouse launches Visceral Films – a new model of production company
These days everybody seems to be touting a new model of production company, but Skip Waterhouse, creative director at new Surry Hills based film company Visceral films claims to have found production Nirvana.
“As a creative guy, I’ve always been on the lookout for a product’s unique selling point, so when I stumbled upon our model, I was blown away,” says Waterhouse.
“Traditionally, a production company’s unique selling point was really just their ‘list of directors’ (along with great producers). At Visceral, we’ve got a great list of directors – including Adam Blaiklock, Eden Diebel and James Holt – but we’ve also got the best post production facilities here in-house, along with a couple of million dollars’ worth of gear.”
“Look, there are a few production companies that have a fair bit of gear, and there are a few post-houses that have a director or two, but it’s never been done to the extent that we at Visceral have done it.
“Our fire-power is fucking huge – two Flames, a full-on DaVinci grading suite, along with a host of Avids, and we’ve got more camera gear you can poke an AWARD pencil at – Alexa’s, steadicams, anamorphics, drones etc, etc – around three million dollars worth of gear at our directors and DoP’s disposal, so unless you want to shoot a Hollywood feature, we’ve got everything you need.
“But, just because everything’s in house, doesn’t mean you have to compromise on quality – we dry-hire the best operators around town, so the end product is as good as any in the business.
“It’s a new model that’s all about putting the maximum amount of those dwindling production dollars, on screen. It’s an old adage, but one that Visceral Films has really brought new meaning to.”

A man who loves a good story and knows how to tell them. That should be the foundation of all production houses. Nice one Skip.
What’s new about this – did I miss the point?
Go you good thing.
Good solution to the shrinking budgets. Good luck to ya Skip!
Exciting times. The model certainly needs a firm tweak – this could be it. Certainly in great hands with the Skipper in charge.
Go Skip! Great to see a new model shaking the production game up.
Skip,
well played mate. Wish you the best.
I can’t explain why but this just feels right to me.
Good on you Skipper

That Spitfire pilot should fly well in production.
Nice one mate, see you soon.
lean, mean and keen. go skippy.
Looking good Mein Herr
Packing some real muscle there and that’s not just the idea for the company. This looks like a great offering and should be one to watch.
Fantastic guys to work with! Congrats Skip! Can’t wait to see some of the projects you guys create!
Awesome news, well done Skip. Exciting times. Looking forward to working on some great stuff with you!

Go SKIP PITCH.
Good work Skip. Count us in. We’re keen to be involved.
To quote the great agent Cooper: ‘I have no idea where this will lead us, but I have a definite feeling it will be a place both wonderful and strange.’
Nice one Skip. They certainly made the right choice bringing you in mate. Best of luck.
Nice one Skip! Looking forward to working on a few projects together soon.
All in one is hardly new, and totally depends on who is driving the machines.
That said, we used the facilities recently and had good results.
The cost was half what it would have been a few years ago.
Bad time to be a director or have a post house.
Nice one mate. They made they right choice bringing you in. Best of luck.
nice one old boy. smart move from a smart fella, looking forward to seeing what comes out.
Well done mate, we’ll be in touch.
while i totally agree the old production model is dead, having millions of dollars worth of kit is meaningless when you don’t have the artists to drive it.
People make good work, not machines and and handful of freelancers isn’t going to cut it.
Nice one skip – talent and awesome gear – winning combo
what’s new about this ???
a production house repping directors … what’s ground breaking here ?
and they bought some post facility so they they can make the mark up on post as well ?
onvious translation of this model ; which ever director u want we’ll get em and what ever changes u want in post we’ll do em
il wait with bated breath to see the ground braking final products then .
So your reping no new directors and instead of hiring gear you bought it . why has production become ” writing about how great we are ” . where are your latest works with awards and global campaigns shot and created under adverse conditiond ?!. post houses have owned computers for years and production companies have never existed with out film directors so i have no idea why this is being hailed as an amazing new approach . i regularly commision production companies to complete projects , and the very first point is , a new accomplished director with spark , and a producer that he or she has already completed several amazing works with ….fitting to my project . whi cares who owns the tripod or the aftereffects ?!
isnt this just eden creative media , an equipment rental house , now making a deal out of being able to get directors ?
