The Art Gallery of NSW commissions The Glue Society to recreate The Kiss for ‘Nude’ exhibition
In a partnership between Tate London and the Art Gallery of NSW, a new exhibition titled Nude: art from the Tate collection – which opened on November 5 in Sydney – presents over 100 major representations of the nude, including paintings, sculptures and photographs by renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso, Lucian Freud and Henri Matisse. At the heart of the show lies the world’s most famous image of erotic love, Auguste Rodin’s sculpture The Kiss (1901-04). Never before has this work from Tate’s collection left Europe.
The Art Gallery of New South Wales has commissioned creative and art collective The Glue Society to create a project inspired by the exhibition – in particular the Rodin work.
By using 3D scanning and printing, the collective has recreated the famous pose using seven couples from around Sydney.
The project set out to investigate the power of nudity in art – and the way the naked form forces us to re-evaluate our own bodies. And the couples who participated reflected different ages, ethnicities, genders and sexualities – giving the classic sculptural work a contemporary relevance.
The artfilm and documentary are featured at the Art Gallery of NSW – along with the 3D printed sculptures, as well as being covered by The Guardian’s Culture section.
The films can be viewed via a central website recreatingthekiss.com – which also features an opportunity for adventurous couples to nominate themselves to become the eighth couple to be scanned and printed for exhibition.
