image001 (1).jpgThis February, the Full Stop Foundation is seeking to raise awareness for Australians who won’t have a happy, safe or loving Valentine’s Day through a targeted social media campaign via Hotwire PR.

The campaign titled ‘I Got Flowers Today’ will add a deeper meaning to this romantic holiday, inspiring everyday Australians to think of those who are experiencing domestic violence or sexual abuse.

‘I Got Flowers Today’ takes inspiration from a poem, written by Paulette Kelly, to highlight that the only reason one should receive flowers this Valentine’s Day is as a sign of affection from loved ones. The heartbreakingly simple poem chronicles the life of an abused woman with the gift of flowers used as an apology for a torturous life, rather than a symbol of love and affection.

The main goal of the campaign is to encourage Australians to share the poem on social media, using the hashtag #IGotFlowersToday to express their support.

Full Stop Foundation’s executive officer, Karen Willis, describes the campaign as a simple way to show support and care for those who are or have been impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault.

By using the hashtag on networks such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, the Full Stop Foundation aims to reach Australians through commonly used platforms, creating a space where these serious issues can be explored.

Says Willis: “The ‘I Got Flowers Today’ campaign provides a great opportunity for Australians to show their support for victims of domestic violence and sexual assaults. I believe it will raise awareness and continue the conversation about the prevalence of domestic violence in Australia and raise awareness of the help that is available.”

The Full Stop Foundation has provided assistance to over 22,000 Australians who have experienced or were at risk of sexual assault or domestic violence in 2016.

If you or someone you know is in need of support, please call the national domestic violence hotline on 1800 RESPECT.
