Darren and Laura Walls, Type + Pixel 2.jpgTwo of Brisbane’s former senior agency heads have teamed up to launch Type + Pixel, a startup dedicated to brand strategy, digital and content.

The firm is headed up by joint directors Darren Walls, previously head of digital at Brisbane creative agency JSA Creative, and his wife Laura Walls, founding member and former head of Haystac Brisbane.

Positioning itself as a branding agency for the digital world, Type + Pixel will focus on delivering audience-centric, multi-layered brand experiences across all screens and platforms.  The brand strategy and digital offer is headed up by Darren, while Laura runs the content strategy and creation team.

Since launch, Type + Pixel has already clocked up a number of jobs including the design of a new ecommerce user experience for youth fashion retailer City Beach, and digital projects for  wealth management firm Infocus, luxury housebuilder Kalka and retirement living operators Aura Holdings. In addition, it is one of just a handful of agencies nationally to be appointed to Tourism and Events Queensland’s content creation panel.

Says Darren Walls: “Our approach is based on the notion that all great digital experiences have to start with a really strong understanding of brand. It’s an element that’s often overlooked in the digital space – there’s a tendency (often driven by the client) to jump straight in without looking at the bigger picture and thinking about the overarching strategy.

“We want to change that and get clients thinking more strategically about what their brand really stands for, so that we can then apply that thinking across our digital and content strategy to create more meaningful experiences. It’s a space we’re really passionate about and excited to be working in.”

Darren led the digital team at JSA Creative for over five years, during which time he transformed the agency’s reputation in the digital space. The last 18 months of his tenure saw him move into a client services director role, where he was instrumental in repositioning JSA into a strategic brand-led creative agency.

During her five years at public relations and influence agency Haystac, Laura firmly established Haystac in the Brisbane marketplace, building it into one of Queensland’s most highly regarded consumer PR agencies and one of Haystac’s most successful business units nationally.
