The new draft provisions cover the promotion of gambling and betting odds in live sports coverage and will implement a ban on advertising gambling between 5.00am and 8.30pm from 5 minutes before to 5 minutes after the live event.

Outside of these times, gambling advertising is only allowed during breaks in play. These changes supplement the existing rules that prohibit the promotion of betting odds during live sport.

The draft provisions are open for comment until Friday 15 December 2017. The provisions are expected to be implemented at the end of March 2018.

The full Commercial Radio Code of Practice underwent an extensive review earlier this year with the new Code registered in March 2017.

Says Joan Warner, chief executive officer, Commercial Radio Australia: “The commercial radio industry continues to monitor and respond to community safeguards and is committed to providing quality radio in line with the Australian listening public’s needs.”

CRA is the industry body for commercial radio broadcasters in Australia. CRA is conducting the review of the promotion of gambling and betting odds in live sport and invites comments from members of the public.

Comments can be submitted to Commercial Radio Australia either by post to Codes Review, Commercial Radio Australia, Level 5, 88 Foveaux Street, Surry Hills NSW 2010 or email to codes@commercialradio.com.au.

All public comments must contain name and address and must be received by 5.00pm on December 15, 2017.
