Even by its own remarkable standards of newsworthiness, Facebook has been making headlines this month. It seems impossible at the moment to open a newspaper or browse online without encountering a picture of Mark Zuckerberg sporting that same slightly uncomfortable, tense look on his face that says: “All is not well”.

At first glance his discomfort appears misplaced. Facebook’s market capitalisation of $US552 billion ($680bn) makes it among the world’s most valuable companies. The site has an extraordinary two billion monthly users and that number continues to grow.

But Facebook faces significant challenges on four main fronts and there is every sign 2018 will be the most testing year in its history.
