AFL appoints Clemenger BBDO Melbourne as creative agency following a competitive pitch
Clemenger BBDO Melbourne has been announced as the creative agency of record for the Australian Football League (AFL), following a competitive pitch.
Its creative remit includes the delivery of a new brand platform, the 2018 season launch campaign, marketing of marquee rounds, finals series, and activities to help grow NSW and QLD audiences.
Says Julian Dunne, head of marketing and insights at AFL: “We are delighted to be working with Clemenger BBDO Melbourne and are looking forward to launching our new creative platform for the 2018 season. We have such a passionate fan base and after record audiences in 2017, we have big ambitions for the year ahead with some work in the pipeline that’s going to help us achieve them.”

Well done Clems. The right size agency for AFL – they need a big agency to hide that fact that you don’t make money. The only issue is that other clients absorb the cost of the privilege of working on the business, which is why after a while it becomes untenable for the agency, and as a client they never stand still.

Smaller boutique advertising and research agencies offer way more bang for buck. Enjoy paying for their overheads and while the senior operators come out to meet you, rest assured it’s the juniors doing the work.

Well if anyone’s going to come out with something fresh and different, you’d hope it’s Clems.
However I’d suggest the task is nothing to do with Melbourne and very much to appeal to NSW and by extension QLD. The rest of the country will already be tuning in / has a market much too small to care about.
