Aussie director Danny Cohen joins EXIT’s roster
Awarded Melbourne director Danny Cohen has joined EXIT’s roster of directors for commercial work.
The latest music video to be directed by Cohen has also landed. Courtney Barnett’s ‘Need a Little Time‘ is Cohen’s sixth collaboration with the recording artist, this time for her anticipated second solo album ‘Tell Me How You Really Feel’–and has already been selected as a Vimeo Staff Pick.
Featuring Barnett in an outer space odyssey, ‘Need A Little Time’ follows up Cohen’s last video to feature Barnett with Kurt Vile, ‘Over Everything‘, which amassed 3.5m views on YouTube. Cohen gathered viral traction and collected more than 14.6m YouTube views for Kirin J Callinan’s ‘Big Enough‘ featuring Jimmy Barnes screaming in the sky, in 2017.
‘Need A Little Time’ honours Cohen’s singular and eclectic style which draws on a diverse range pop culture references, and places Barnett in an asteroid-filled milky way by way of elaborate teleportation–playing true to the kind of imagery that the Australian music industry love him for.
Says Leah Churchill-Brown, EP, EXIT: “I got hooked on Danny’s visual sensibility from the treatment and boards for his Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile clip, and wanted to sign him immediately. Danny’s use of visual humour and wit, and his playful sense of storytelling is bold in quite an epic and singular way–a rarity in an oversaturated marketplace.”
In the past two years Cohen’s work has been recognised with awards that include St Kilda Film Festival’s Best Music Video Award 2016 and the Triple J Award for Best Music Video 2016, as well as nominations for ARIA Best Music Video Award 2016, ARIA Best Music Video Award 2017, the Triple J Award for Best Music Video 2017 and the A2IM Libera Awards Best Music Video 2017.
It’s this track record that has Churchill-Brown excited about Danny’s foray into commercials.
Says Churchill-Brown: “Like EXIT founder Garth Davis, Danny comes from a background in design and photography. Garth signed Danny because of his unique voice, but also as he brings a very contemporary and commercial aesthetic to his work–so we’re beyond excited to see what he brings to his work with brands.”
Cohen’s other music video collaborations have gained considerable traction, including several collabs for King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard (‘People Vultures‘, ‘Gamma Knife‘) and Kirin J Callinan (‘S.A.D‘, ‘Big Enough’), for which ‘Big Enough’ received massive global media attention.
Cohen’s photographic portfolio also boasts album covers and promo images for a host of other artists, including American indie star Mac Demarco and comedian Eric Andre.

Hasnn’t Exit shut up shop?
@Huh, don’t be a mean spirited twat. EXIT have signed several exciting young directors recently which is surely a sign they are far from closing their doors.
You are obviously from a competing production company. Haven’t the days of flagrantly damaging a company’s reputation long gone with the well known uncertainty of every division of the ad business. Look both ways before crossing the street tomorrow.
