Spotlight on Female Directors: Florence Noble

Flo.jpgAs part of a regular series with Free The Bid Australia, Campaign Brief shines the spotlight on top female commercials directors in Australia and New Zealand...

Having obsessed over BBC comedy from pretty much the womb, Florence Noble began her work career writing amusing copy and directing radio ads for TBWA advertising in London, Johannesburg and Auckland.

Three best spots:
Pizza Hut
Bank First
Long White Vodka

After quitting copywriting and having been fired from several cafes, Florence took a film course in Auckland, and took a job as a production assistant at Screentime Ltd, whilst freelancing as a writer and photographer for several fashion and music magazines. She has since worked in almost every film production role on offer, from stills photographer, to location manager, to actor.
Flo's first writer/ director short film reached the finals of the Auckland 48 Hour film Fest in 2006. And her most recent film Things Are Going Really Well was selected for the LA Comedy Festival, Maramures, Sweden's Norrkoping Film Festival and the Melbourne International Film Festival, where she attended the Accelerator Program.

Florence is the creator of the online sketch comedy Blind Pilot, and has collaborated with Nick Boshier (Bondi Hipsters, Beached Az) on numerous satirical projects, including Meanwhile on Earth and the 2014 Emmy award winning Australian comedy, 7 Days Later.

Florence loves the team aspect of film making, working with actors to find truthfulness and subtlety in their performance. And with a crew to make a lovely and real story come alive for people to lose themselves in. She especially enjoys dramedy and awkwardness.

Since launching a year ago, Free The Bid has 200 Australian Women Directors on its searchable database. Free The Bid now has over 20 major agencies that use the database to find the right director for each of their projects and have committed to putting one female director in the mix for every job.
