Anna Fawcett’s LIA Diary from Las Vegas

LIA JURY PICTURE 2012.jpgAustralia’s Anna Fawcett, executive producer at Filmgraphics Entertainment, Sydney – pictured second from far left – was president of the LIA TV/Cinema/ Online Film Production + Post Production Jury this week in Las Vegas. Here’s her report, exclusive to Campaign Brief.

It was a truly rewarding experience being President of the Craft Jury at the London Advertising Awards 2012 in Las Vegas. Mainly due to the team who run it, lead by the owner Barbara Levy, and the people they bought in from around the world to participate.  My jury from UK, South Africa and Russia, all had a ton of experience and I found them to be interesting, intelligent and funny.

The work ranged from epic to small and quirky in each category so at times it was difficult to decide on who deserved the award. So what we did was give a few awards to ensure that everyone who entered original, magical or brilliantly crafted work was not overlooked.

Approaching the work from the point of view of craftspeople involved an edifying experience, both from the jury’s methodical dissecting of the work and also the lengthy, and at times, heated discussions that seemed to accompany every execution that hinted of being worthy of recognition.

It will be interesting to me when the awards are announced to see if our selections are praised or pilloried. There will be a couple of “controversial” decisions I’m sure but I believe we “done good”. One of the areas that surprised us all was the lack of thought that went into some of the entries, for example, if you enter something in the animation category, it should actually contain some animation.

And of course we were in Las Vegas, the town that never sleeps. After being taken out to dinner every night (thank you Barbara), we’d walk past the gambling floor to get to our rooms, where there are comfortable chairs and free drinks served by beautiful women. All had a good time and when it comes to “what stays in Vegas”, I wish it were me.
