IKEA-TEMPE-1.jpgThree Australian families bedded down at IKEA Tempe in Sydney last night after applying for the most unique Airbnb listing, that caught the attention of IKEA fans all around the world. The campaign was via The Monkeys with PR by Mango and Espresso Communications.

Shortlisted from more than 1000 entries, the three families who convinced IKEA hosts they were most worthy of this once in a lifetime stay, arrived as the Tempe store’s registers were shutting down and doors were closing for the day.

Soon they settled into their individually themed accommodation nestled amongst the IKEA showroom – price tags and all. Their rooms were styled by IKEA interior design experts themed ‘Rustic Charm’, ‘Modern Elegance’ and, with the help of Airbnb host Claire Ferguson, ‘Inner City Living’. They hung up their clothes in the wardrobes, the kids negotiated who got the top bunk and checked out the entertainment, before sitting down to a scrumptious Swedish Smörgåsbord including the iconic IKEA meatballs and Scandinavian salmon.

IKEA-TEMPE-2.jpgCome morning, based on a national survey uncovering how Aussies wish they could be woken up, IKEA made dreams come true for Heather Noakes and family from Abbotsford, Brigid O’Connor and  family from Camperdown and Kimberly Ross and family Mascot. From puppies jumping on the doona, to being serenaded by a string orchestra and freshly prepared IKEA breakfast served in bed, the guests enjoyed remarkable wake-ups.

So what was it like to spend the night inside the famous blue box?

According to Brigid O’Conner from Camperdown: “The girls have been so excited, it’s like a dream come true to sleep in an IKEA store. The wake up was perfect and the puppies were just gorgeous. The girls love puppies so now I think they might expect that every morning.

“The dinner was delicious. It was great to meet all the people from IKEA and Airbnb. The tips they gave us to make the most of our homes were wonderful too. I’m going to have to buy everything before I leave now. It was really fun and I’m so glad we did it.”
