Chris Hanrahan + Jordy Molloy in Cannes: Day 1

le beds.jpgChris Hanrahan and Jordy Molloy, a young creative team from DDB Melbourne, are competing in the Film category of the Cannes Young Lions competition. They write exclusively for CB.

Every night Jordy and I separate the two single beds in our hotel room until they’re an acceptable distance apart, and every day we come back to find that the maid has pushed them together again.

While her attempts to be a great wingman are certainly appreciated, they are unfortunately in vain. Because Jordy and I aren’t in Cannes together for some kind of romantic Euro sex romp – we’re here to win the Young Lions Film competition for Australia.

image1[4].jpgAnd seeing as we don’t get the brief until le Wednesday, we’ve been able to soak up what the festival has to offer before we immerse ourselves in 48 hours of tearing our hair out, abusing each other, not showering, and chain smoking duty-free ciggies.

Here are some of our best experiences so far, and what we think was the key take out for each.

Brazilian-themed Rooftop Pool Party

Seeing as we arrived a day before the festival started, we thought we’d get some creative inspiration by taking the train to Monaco for the day. This turned out to be the best idea we’ve ever had in our lives.

Key Take Out: Buy more gold chains and linen.

Marylyn Manson

Brian Warner, aka Marylyn, was remarkable. Laid back, calm, even a bit shy – the complete opposite of the make-up wearing, prosthetic limb le marylin manson.jpgcollecting rock star we all know and love. He gave fascinating insights into his work methods and on creating his own brand. “You can’t sell something that’s fake – people just don’t want it. Stay true to yourself and keep evolving.” His thoughts on how the music industry is becoming watered down were also intriguing: “If everyone can make music… make better music.”

Key Take Out:     The rumour that he removed his own rib is false. Sadly.

Evan Spiegal, co-founder of Snapchat

It’s not everyday you get to hear from a 25 year old guy with $17 billion dollars in his pocket. He likened Snapchat to old-fashioned conversations – where there’s no history or ‘digital footprint’ left behind, it’s over and done with. Also innovative were the ways the South American man sitting next to us constantly coughed up phlegm throughout the entire presentation.

Key Take Out: Create a start-up and get minted.

€42 for two rum and Cokes

Almost an entire day’s budget blown on shitty rum, flat Coke and a miserable shrivelled-up excuse for a lime. Pathétique.

Key Take Out: Increase credit card limit.
