Revolver’s Steve Rogers directs Turbo Tax Super Bowl spot with Sir Anthony Hopkins via W+K
Revolver director and Aussie Steve Rogers has directed a new spot for Turbo Tax which stars esteedmed British actor Sir Anthony Hopkins for Wieden + Kennedy.
Produced with Revolver’s US partner Biscuit Filmworks, the ad features Sir Anthony Hopkins, looking refined as ever, discussing his career with a journalist on the notion of ‘selling out’.
As he sips from a Turbo Tax teacup, in his Turbo Tax slippers with his furry friend whom he’s named Turbotax.com, Hopkins maintains his integrity and denies he would ever tarnish his name in order to sell something.
The amusing spot aired over the weekend during the Super Bowl.

1) they used someone with acting ability
2) they grew the gag. Campbell’s burns it all up in the first shot.
3) speaking of shots, looks like TurboTax also had a DoP and colourist
4) it’s actually funny overall
Monty Python didn’t invent meta humour
It’s not bad, mainly because Hopkins elevates the idea , but it just seems a bit tired and dated.
Both ads are terribly ordinary, but one clearly copied the other. Grew the gag? Please.
