Nancy Hartley’s Cannes Diary: Day One

Day One is always pretty solitary, and somewhat exhausting. After meeting my fellow jurors last night at a lovely reception at The Carlton, it was down to business bright and early.

Our jury president, Ricardo John of JWT Brazil set some ground rules and asked us to look for work that talked to real people, not just advertising professionals in a jury room.

IMG_0550.jpgIn a way, Day One is like cutting a swathe through the undergrowth in order to find the light. But you don’t want to hack away with a machete; carefully considered pruning is what’s required. Today I’ve seen work that is beautifully executed, yet derivative, great copy let down by poor art direction … and some really fresh ideas and executions too.

Tomorrow will be more of the same ground work and we are all looking forward to Day Three when we get to interact and discuss the work. The best part, especially with such an interesting bunch of people. Off to bed now to recharge my own batteries and those of my metaphorical whipper snipper. Ciao for now.
