Cudlipp and Lewis back in search of Exposure

For the past five years, the commercial arm of Exposure has been delivering solely on the work of filmmaker Kevin Denholm. His people-based style of storytelling has always provided the perfect fit for top-flight clients (Air New Zealand, Toyota, Westpac, Telecom, New World, et al)... but it has also created an ever-increasing demand for the Exposure approach.

"For a while now," says producer Stephanie Bauer, "we've been looking at ways to expand our capacity. But the simple truth is, one director can only be in one place at a time.

"Now, in a piece of spectacularly good timing, it happens that a class producer/director team have thrown their hat back in the ring after a sabbatical from the ad business. It's all come together surprisingly quickly, the pieces all fit, the stars have aligned, etcetera, etcetera... the result is that the Exposure 'less is more' one-director era is officially history. Welcome aboard, Peter Cudlipp and Maggie Lewis (pictured)."
Cannes, D&AD, a slew of other local and international awards, and the great pieces of film that go with them - Peter Cudlipp has built quite a legacy in the industry over the past twenty or so years. Now, Exposure is looking forward to becoming the next chapter in Cudlipp's story. Already well-established on New Zealand screens with campaigns for Telecom, Contact Energy, LTSA, Air NZ and Census, his most recent work is the 2009 PlaceMakers campaign.

Says Cudlipp: "My early theatre and acting background remains a strong influence on my approach. My focus has always been on using performance to tell stories with clarity and impact."

And in keeping with his reputation for dedication, commitment, and "big picture" sensibilities, Cudlipp is also one of the few people on the planet who have actually gone out and purchased carbon credits.

With over thirty years in the business, Maggie Lewis is one of the most experienced producers in the region. Her passion for great advertising is only matched by her passion for a rich life filled with laughter and excellence in equal parts. Born and raised in New Zealand, her early professional years were spent with ad agencies in London and Auckland. In the mid 80s she moved to Australia and joined Tony Williams at Marmalade Films and then founded Sydney Film Company with him. Together their work included much of the iconic Kiwi advertising of the last two decades including Toyota "Bugger", Telecom "SPOT" and "Hyundai Santa Fe "Restless".

Says Lewis: "Much of my recent involvement in the industry has been building new talent, fostering the current crop of producers and directors. It's been great - but I still love being hands-on in making ads."

So after her well-earned break on returning home from Oz, Exposure is very happy to be providing Maggie with a chance to get her hands dirty again!

"This is all pretty exciting," says Bauer. "After all, it really is the start of a whole new era for Exposure. And we're looking forward to seeing a couple of fresh faces in the office."

UPDATE: Mitre 10 "Little Boys" has won this year's Fair Go Best Ad Award by a comfortable margin - and just goes to prove that giving kids firm direction can definitely get results! Congratulations to agency Draft FCB, director Kevin Denholm and everyone else involved in creating this "little gem of an ad"... and apologies to any typical Aussies.
