For all our English fans…. Carlsberg ‘Team Talk’
Carlsberg, the official beer of the England football team, has launchedits new TV commercial via Saatchi & Saatchi, London, as thebuild-up to this year’s World Cup reaches its peak. The 90 second film features a cast list that reads like a who’s who ofEnglish sporting greats. They all combine to deliver “Probably the bestteam talk in the world…” to the England football team.
The line-up includes Sir Trevor Brooking, Nigel Benn, World Cup winnerJack Charlton, Stuart Pearce, fifteen times world darts champion Phil’The Power’ Taylor and legendary adventurer Sir Ranulph Fiennes.
The ad will run until the end of June, part of Carlsberg UK’s widercampaign to inspire the England team this summer. Since February, thebrewer has been asking fans to show their support by creating their ownteam talks and has now unveiled its own version.

The Australian version would be a feature length film.

The Poms do ads better than they do football teams. And this ad might make the quarters.
I’m a proud, patriotic pom but that was truly cringeworthy. Heavy handed writing. Poor direction. Wasted opportunity of a fantastic brief.

Actually, the only bit I liked was Bobby Moore at the end.
Not in the same league as the 1996 “Three Lions on a shirt” anthem.

It made me want to be a pom, and I hate them. (During the cricket season, anyway. And if we get to meet them in the World Cup.)

I kept hoping it would go completely into the Shakespeare Henry V Band of Brothers speech, with footballers instead of soldiers, but it didn’t.

When you try to play it too cool, you across as a try hard loser.
I agree with 2.48 and 10.30, sort of. The VO should be different, more honest.
We are the Three Lions, but we have no lions in England.
We are the Three Squirrels and we’re not going to win the World Cup.
We are not good enough.
We don’t have the skill.
We don’t have the tactics.
And we definitely don’t have the temperament. Never have.
We will go one further than we normally do.
We have an italian manager.
He’ll teach us how to dive better.
But we’ll go home with our heads held high.
Because it will be someone else’s fault we’re out.

And I’m serious.
The Henry V speech would have been sensational. Maybe it’s been used before. It’s a monty for any English sporting event.
I can imagine different lines delivered either by different players or else by great past players, or maybe a mix of both.
It’s a wonderful speech, my second favorite Shakespearean speech of all time, after Mark Anthony’s eulogy for Caesar. (Which I use every time I’m undermined by an AE… “For Charlie Staircase is an honourable man. So are they all, all honourable men.”)
