ArwaNic.jpgPHUKET: Tensions ran high yesterday as 18 Young Lotus teams from 18 cities across Asia Pacific were given the brief that could potentially jump-start their careers.

The challenge: concept, plan and shoot an amazing film under 2 minutes long – all that within 24 hours!

“You can use your digital camera, or even your iPhone. It’s not about having big production values, or having a big budget. It’s about having a big idea,” said John Merrifield, chairman and chief mentor of the Young Lotus Workshop 2011, as well as the creative-at-large at TBWA\Asia Pacific.

After winning the Australian leg of the Adfest Young Lotus competition, Australia is represented by Nic Buckingham, art director (above right) and Arwa Mahdawi, planner (above left) from The Campaign Palace, Sydney.

Screen shot 2011-03-16 at 2.24.23 PM.jpg“Given that these teams represent the crème de la crème of young creatives from across Asia Pacific, I think it’ll be a tough fight,” says Melvin Mangada, managing partner and ECD of TBWA\Santiago Mangada Puno. “It’ll also be interesting to see how each team’s differing backgrounds, experiences and cultural roots will reflect in their work, as they attempt to unearth universal truths that cut across the region.”

Of 18 teams, only three teams will be shortlisted to present their work on stage to ADFEST delegates during the Young Lotus 2011 Final Showdown this Thursday 17 March at 12pm. In another Young Lotus first, delegates will also have a hand in deciding the fates of the finalists as they vote for the winner of the Young Lotus “Most Popular Vote”.

The Showdown will also see Merrifield reveal the brief to the delegates, as well as one additional surprise.

“Apart from being crowned this region’s top young creatives, the Young Lotus champions will receive a career-changing opportunity of a lifetime,” says Merrifield. “Let’s just say that this additional carrot will give them a shot at making a name for themselves not just regionally, but also on the world stage.”

Don’t miss the ‘Young Lotus 2011 Final Showdown’ where you could have first dibs on hiring the industry’s future stars.
