Curious and Stephen Kang premiere ‘Desert’
Curious director Stephen Kang is premiering his second full-lengthfeature ‘Desert’ tonight, before flying off to France where hisshort film ‘Blue’ has been selected to screen In Competition at CriticsWeek at the Cannes Film Festival.
Produced by Matt Noonan andLeanne Saunders at Curious, ‘Desert’ tells the story of Jenny, a Koreangirl whose New Zealand boyfriend abandons her on their wedding dayafter learning she is pregnant. As Jenny searches for him, helped byher new friend Joon, she is forced to look inside herself – and the newlife forming there – for answers.
Curious is now producing and distributing films at the highest level,and ‘Desert’ is one of several short films and features to screen atA-list film festivals this year. ‘Desert’ had its world premiere at thePusan International Film Festival in 2010, which is one of the mostimportant film festivals in the Asia Pacific, famous for unearthing newfilms and first-time directors.
Now, Kang’s short film ‘Blue’ – which was also produced by Curious -will screen at the 50th La Semaine de la Critique (Critic’s Week) inCannes from 12th – 20th May. Critic’s Week has unearthed directors likeAlejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu (21 grams, Babel) and Miranda July (Me andYou and Everyone We Know).
“I think it’s every filmmakers dream to get invited in La Semaine de laCritique in their lifetime. So when I found out the news, it was sosurreal. Just like the world that ‘Blue’ lives in,” says Kang.
Curious began working with Kang following the success of his debutfeature, {dream} preserved. Kang was born in Korea but moved to NewZealand in the early 1990s, and attended the Berlinale Talent Campus aspart of the Berlin International Film Festival in 2007. He is indevelopment on a new feature film ‘Summer Rhapsody and Blind City’ withNew Zealand Film Commission financing.
‘Desert’ premieres at the Rialto Newmarket this tonight at 6pm and on the Rialto Channel May 6th.
