Nancy Hartley’s Cannes Diary 2011 – Day One from the Cannes Cyber jury room

Nancy-Cannes.jpgNancy Hartley, joint executive creative director of SapientNitro Australia, is Australia’s representative on the Cyber jury.  She has just finished day one of judging and writes exclusively for Campaign Brief. Other Aussie and Kiwi jurors will be contributing exclusively to the CB Blog over the next 10 days, so make sure you check in daily, hourly, every minute…

It’s been a big first day on the Cyber Jury, making our way through 2,835 entries. Jury President [Aussie expat] Nick Law briefed us on getting the balance right between Madison Avenue and Silicon Valley, with a final filter to cut through the hyperbole: “Yeah, but would anyone really care about that?”

Screen shot 2011-06-17 at 9.16.11 AM.jpgDuring the morning session I was starting to wonder – a lot of well-executed work, but few real gems. Thankfully the afternoon served up some nice surprises. Talking to the other judges, there are more of those to come. We’re still judging individually at the moment, so I’m really looking forward to getting through this next round and into group discussions.

It’s a great jury spanning Asia Pacific, UK, Europe, Netherlands, North & South America and Canada. Good to be judging with my Swedish D&AD jury mate Robert Lund again – I’ve just been watching the dandad feed and see we awarded a Black Pencil to Wilderness Downtown.

Couple of great articles here from my fellow jurors. Anyone who saw Nick Law’s keynote speech at the Caxtons will want to share this one:

And from CP+B’s VP ECD (can I buy a vowel?) Tiffany Rolfe:

I note Tiffany is also a fan of Tina Fey’s book Bossypants, which is a great read for any creative or creative director – especially the chapter “Things I learned from Lorne Michaels”. Point 3: “When hiring, mix Harvard Nerds with Chicago Improvisors and stir” seems particularly relevant as we go through the Cyber entries.

Must admit I’d love to be more like Tina Fey and less like Liz Lemon. But for Day 2 of judging, I just look forward to saying “NERDS! Wish I’d done that.”
