Simon Vicar’s Cannes Diary – Day One from the Cannes Radio Lions jury room

SIMON-VICARS-CANNES.JPGSimon Vicars, senior creative at DDB, is New Zealand’s representative on the Radio jury.  He has just finished day one of judging and writes exclusively for Campaign Brief. Other Aussie and Kiwi jurors will be contributing exclusively to the CB Blog over the next week, so make sure you check in daily, hourly, every minute…

Apparently radio is the best category to judge. So far I’d agree with that. We have the least work to get through (1363 spots) and we have a sweet balcony with views out to the beach. Surprisingly there are not many spicy babes out getting there tan on, just lots of old women and dudes wearing speedos. From a distance some of the more supple guys in speedos look like topless girls which is at first exhilarating but ultimately disappointing.

So far the work has been about as disappointing as the beach boobs. We were told that usually only 10% of entries get shortlisted. At first I was like, ‘no way!’. Now I’m like, ‘way’. But the good stuff does stand out, and there has been some good stuff in the mix.

My fellow jurors are from all over the world and I’m sensing what a German finds funny is not necessarily what a Brazilian finds funny, which should make it interesting when we come to making our shortlist in a few days.

In unrelated news, a French woman struck me in the groin with her over enthusiastic European walking style. I was strolling behind her along the Croisette when i got too close and she accidentally slapped my gear with her backswing. Awkward.
