Curious Film celebrates three years as the region’s first CarboNZero production house

Piccurious carbon2.jpgCurious Film is celebrating its three year anniversary since becoming the region’s first CarboNZero production company.

In 2008, Curious joined Landcare Research’s carboNZeroCert programme and began measuring all carbon emissions from its corporate and production activities. After completing an independent verification audit to measure and reduce the company’s greenhouse gas emissions, it now offsets any unavoidable emissions using a verifiable carbon offsetting provider.

Says Matt Noonan, executive producer at Curious Film: “At Curious, we believe production companies have a responsibility to make the industry more sustainable given Australia and New Zealand’s remoteness. There will always be naysayers, but we’re proud to say that all shoots undertaken with Curious Film since 1 October 2008 – no matter what the location or technology or timeframes involved – have been carbon neutral.”

At the 2010 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Cancun, leaders agreed that temperatures can comfortably rise by a maximum of two degrees by 2050, although this would probably flood Bangladesh, the Maldives, Netherlands, Miami and New York.

To achieve a maximum of two degrees global warming, each person must emit no more than two tonnes of carbon dioxide per year (currently, the average Australian emits 18 tonnes per year).

Curious believes the production industry must do its part to reduce per capita CO2 emissions. In an industry that produces one-off projects in multiple locations in very tight timeframes, CO2 management is vital in helping agencies and clients meet their own sustainable targets.

Similarly, in Germany, BBDO has launched a program called Carbon Film Quote, calling on production companies to implement strategies for CO2 management. To read more about the program, click here
