You can watch the interview with Middleditch where he talks about his native New Zealand’s influence on his career, how he made the transition from videos to commercials to feature films and back again, the importance of collaboration, and the future of creativity.

Middleditch is one of nine global speakers presenting at the first-ever Creative Fuel Conference, to be held at Eveleigh’s Carriageworks on Monday, 28 July 2014.

Middleditch will be speaking about the genesis of creativity, allowing attendees to get a glimpse inside his creative mind and learn about his methodologies. He will also dissect some of his successful works and discuss emerging trends in advertising storytelling.

While still at school, Middleditch began winning local filmmaking competitions. As a teenager he made music videos for artists like Tim Finn. He has gone on to direct four feature films to date and is regarded as one of the top performance TV commercial directors in the world.

Middleditch is Australia’s most awarded commercials director, with over 300 medals including eight Cannes Lions (four of which are gold), and numerous international and national awards. Some of his best-known commercials are Into the Woods (John West), The Big Ad (Carlton Draught), Print Guru (Reflex), Nod (Pepsi) and Utopia (Pure Blonde).

His first film, Terra Nova, won the first film prize in Montreal in 1999, won Best of Festival at the Edinburgh Film Festival, and went on to screen at over 30 festivals worldwide. His second feature, A Cold Summer, premiered in competition at the Rotterdam Film Festival, and earned him an Australian Film Institute nomination for Best Director. In 2009, Middleditch completed his third feature, Separation City, a dramatic comedy starring Joel Edgerton, Rhona Mitra and Thomas Kretschmann. Middleditch’s first American feature film for Lionsgate — Rapture-Palooza — was released last year, starring Anna Kendrick.
