Cancer Society New Zealand launches its first new TVC in 22 years via ANZ and Whybin\TBWA
To celebrate Cancer Society New Zealand’s 25th nationwide Daffodil Day (28 August) the organisation has released its first new TVC in 22 years, funded by its principal sponsor ANZ and created by Whybin\TBWA, Auckland.
Says Andy Lish, creative lead, Whybin\TBWA: “As the creative agency of the principal sponsor ANZ, we were tasked with the job of re-creating a TV advertisement that had been airing for more than 20 years. As this was the 25th anniversary of Daffodil Day, we wanted the new commercial to capture its true message – a message of hope for the one in three New Zealanders affected by cancer.
“We were honoured and delighted to produce this pro-bono piece and it is our hope that by putting more of a modern face to this campaign, it will help spread a message of hope for many years to come.”
Says Astrud Burgess, head of marketing, ANZ: “ANZ has been the principal sponsor of Daffodil Day since its inception. To celebrate our very proud and longstanding partnership and with the help of our agency Whybin\TBWA, we have worked with the Cancer Society to produce a new television commercial for Daffodil Day to replace the one they’ve had for the last 22 years.
“The Cancer Society wanted to create an emotive TVC that modernised and put a human face to their organisation and one that also represented the one in three New Zealanders affected by cancer. The TVC was based off a social campaign that ANZ ran in August last year asking people “Who do you wear your daffodil for?
“Fundraising for the Cancer Society has always been at the forefront of our sponsorship, our staff alone have raised $16 million over the past 25 years. So we really hope the new TVC compels people to donate this daffodil day in order to help the Cancer Society provide care, comfort and hope and fund vital research.”
Says Claire Austin, CEO, The Cancer Society New Zealand: “We are absolutely thrilled with the new milestone TVC and believe that it will make a real difference for how our organisation is perceived and we are confident it will support greater Daffodil Day income in the coming years.”

soryy to be cynical, but when the worlds great philanthropists donate towards great works of social good, there is a true sense of altruism which is somewhat backed up by the fact that many of these people choose to remain anonymous – or at least make little of it. Bill Gates for example does stuff in his name not in Microsoft’s name.
When I see a frigging great big ANZ logo sharing the screen with the Cancer Council’s logo and hogging the airwaves – I feel a little sickened.
If you mean it – just do it.
Banks are a cancer we all suffer from.
