Simon Vicars’ Cannes Diary #2

Individual PR photo-thumb-300x422-256314.jpgSimon Vicars (left), creative group head, Colenso BBDO, Auckland is representing NZ on the Cannes Radio Lions jury. Vicars, along with most of the other New Zealand and Australian judges, reports exclusively for CB.

Today someone broadcast an orgasm into space.

Cannes is awesome.

And so are my fellow jurors, led by Mario D’Andrea. They’re a clever bunch, and together we’re nudging closer to a shortlist.

It’s still early days but there are some trends:

South Africans can really write radio

Computerised voices are tiresome (and probably shouldn’t be entered into ‘casting’)

Singing without a reason is so hot right now, as is gender equality.

The South Americans, usually so brilliant in Print, have lifted their game in radio.

Australasian work is, unfortunately, a little scarce.

The biggest debate will come in the next few days. It will be around what is and what isn’t considered radio. Juries protecting their categories is big this year at Cannes. I think it’s a good thing.

In the next 24hrs we’ll have a finalised shortlist. Good luck to everyone with work entered.

I’m looking forward to tomorrow.

Assuming big horny space aliens don’t wipe us all out.
