September 2009 Archives

Maddocks-NEW.jpgBelinda Rowe 2_HRC_8bit.jpgJeremy-Nicholas-APG-web.jpgFollowing our CB Blog scoop earlier this afternoon, the Boards of Directors of the Australasian Writers and Art Directors Association (AWARD), the Advertising Federation of Australia (AFA) and the Account Planning Group (APG) confirmed that they are in discussions about the possible formation of a new organisation to represent their interests.

The Boards said that they had been working together for several months and are now in the process of canvassing industry stakeholders to seek their support.

Any new organisation would be formed from the memberships of all three groups to create a body that would bring together the strengths, expertise and knowledge of the AFA, AWARD and APG. CB hears the Media Federation of Australia (MFA) has chosen not to join the organisation after a high level meeting convened on Monday.
Maddocks-NEW.jpgMARK-CHAMPION.jpgCB hears AWARD, the Advertising Federation of Australia (AFA) and the Account Planning Group (APG) are about to combine forces to form a new super organisation - yet to be named - to represent the entire Australian marketing communications industry.

The plan is soon to be put to the members of all three organisations in a series of extraordinary general meetings, but CB hears early indications are that the top creative directors of Australia are all for the idea, which will give AWARD, with a 500+ strong membership, a seat at the top table in the business, while still retaining its independence and schedule of events it holds each year. One CD told CB that AWARD would be guaranteed the deputy chair role in the new organisation and several spots on the board, with the AFA getting the chair, as he or she would still be dealing with the big issues that affect the entire industry.

AFA CEO Mark Champion (top right) and AWARD chairman Richard Maddocks, ECD of Clemenger BBDO, Sydney (top left) were locked in meetings this afternoon but our source says an official announcement is expected as early as Friday so stay tuned.

ORS_Projection_1.jpgMarketforce and the Office of Road Safety are taking the drink-driving message to streets via a series of eye-catching building projections.
The campaign, which launched last month, features several themes.
The Brain Game is an 8-bit style 80's video game animation that features a bottle shooting alcohol at a giant brain. As the game progresses the brain becomes critical and explodes making the point that it's game over ORS_Projection_6.jpgwhen drinking kills driving skills (see below).
The Art of Safe Driving is a separate project that features the works of ten of the city's leading urban artists. Each artist was given one of the key drink driving messages to interpret in their own unique way. The final works were then turned into animated sequences that formed the Art of Safe Driving exhibition projection, which ran to coincide with the Perth Winter Arts Festival.

WarrenPalmer.jpgFor 14 years now the Advertising industry in Western Australia has celebrated with the Oasis Ball but also have supported The Salvation Army's Crossroads West Program.
Oasis House in the northern suburbs is more than a place for young people to live. It is a place that they can call home and endeavours to heal the lives of young people who have not received an ideal start to their lives. Oasis House has seen many a young person go through its doors over the past 13 years who have received love, guidance and encouragement all because people have cared.
The Independent living program provides supported accommodation options to help ensure that young people leaving department care continue to find direction, advice and a listening ear. The Oasis Ball has provided an opportunity for the advertising industry to show that it cares and make a significant difference that will last. Thankyou.

303s take the Jesus challenge

| | Comments (5) | TrackBacks (0)
aal_swimupbars.jpgWhen 303 took the challenge to market the Bible Society's Jesus All About Life campaign, they knew it would be one of the toughest marketing challenges to crack.
The campaign objective is to get lapsed Christians talking about Jesus again. It isn't to get atheists to change their views or convert people from other religions. The problem is typical spiritual messages that sound like they come directly from the Church cause the public to switch off. 303's strategy was to take a more novel approach, creating a fun platform for dialogue around Jesus. Research showed that most people, religious or not, felt quite positive about Jesus.

OasisChq09_2.jpgSenior representative's of Perth's media, agencies and The Salvation Army gathered at Burswood's (A)lure Bar yesterday evening for the presentation of proceeds of the 2009 Oasis Ball.

New Oasis Project chairman Nita Davey thanked the Ball's major sponsors Adshel, Evoke Media and Media Tonic/ Torch Media and announced they had already signed on as major sponsors for the 2010 Ball. Davey also thanked Q Direct Press, WASP and Direct Image for all the print and signage work, as well as major auction organisers Adam Marshall and Amanda Reid, who have stood down from the committee.

Yvonne Hunt, manager of The Salvation Army's Crossroads West program, explained how critical the Oasis contribution is to their work before Gavin Bain, chairman for the 09 Ball, presented the cheque for $150,000 to The Salvation Army's Warren Palmer. Bain said total funds donated to Crossroads West from the 13 Ball's held to date had now topped $1.5 million.

The PADC Festival of Ideas was held at Yanchep this past weekend. Thanks to 303's Malcolm MacLean and Mike Sequeira for this report and pics.

BB_30.jpgAlmost 50 delegates received a major brain boost at the 2009 PADC Festival of Ideas, a weekend seminar series with all the PADC Award judges.
The Festival this year was at the historic Yanchep Lodge, rather than the traditional Rottnest location, and everyone was in for a very different weekend right from the start with the Festival's MC, yours truly, getting the whole bus to do a gangsta rap I'd written for the bus trip up the freeway.
The weekend got quirkier from there as everyone shuffled under the earth and into a giant cave illuminated with fairy lights to listen to the world-class speakers.

Weekend funny...

Meerkats move HBF media East

| | Comments (23) | TrackBacks (0)
Meerkats has reorganised its media buying services over the past few weeks and the changes have upset several people in the Perth media scene. Below is their official justification via their press release... in addition to this news the Murdoch University account will also be traveling East to Mindshare.

Recently, recognising channel planning as increasingly a key factor in modern through-the-line brand communications, Meerkats provided HBF with a more brand-centric solution to their media needs. Meerkats and global Group M media brand Mindshare currently work together on several Meerkats clients, with Meerkats providing Channel Planning and Mindshare the buying tools and resources along with Digital Strategy. A similar model has now been taken up by HBF.

Meerkats Director of Channel Planning Mark Pinney said "Putting people and consumers at the heart of campaign planning is what Meerkats is all about. That's why Mike (Edmonds) and Ronnie (Duncan) are so passionate about developing a world class Channel Planning offering. The more we know about what people are doing, their thoughts today and their view looking forward; the more chance we have of creating relevant and engaging work for our clients."

PADC4.jpgThe judging for this year's PADC awards happens today. Despite reports that entries are down 30% the standard of work should be quite strong. Last night the PADC committee entertained the visiting judges with a dinner at Lamonts in East Perth.

This year's judges are: Steve Back, Executive Creative Director Saatchi & Saatchi Australia. Steve has won and judged at Cannes, D&AD, The One Show and The Clio Awards. With the guidance from a very talent Salsa professional, the agencies were taught the basic moves in the Latin dance of love - '1, 2, 3, 4 - 1, 2, 3, 4'

WA consumers more confident: survey

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry says West Australians are more confident about the future of the economy.

A survey of 400 people from metropolitan and regional WA showed consumer confidence has risen by 25 per cent from last quarter.

Three-quarters of respondents believe the economy will rebound over the next year.

The chamber's chief economist, John Nicolaou, says consumer confidence is key to boosting the state's economy.

"There certainly has been a spike in confidence and that can only be good news to the extent that consumer attitudes, positive consumer attitudes, do lead to real economic outcomes," he said.

Mr Nicolaou says consumer confidence is closely linked to economic recovery.

"There are very strong signs, both in terms of attitudes and also in terms of real economic conditions, that the worst of the global financial crisis might now be behind us," he said.

The long-rumoured deal between Mitchell Communication Group and the local directors of Starcom has finally been concluded, with Mitchells announcing the acquisition of the WA media agency headed by Alan Matthews.

Rumours of a sell out to Mitchells have existed for over six months. To effect the sale, the four local shareholders bought back Starcom MediaVest's shareholding in the Perth operation and then sold the business and assets to Mitchell & Partners (WA) Pty Ltd and Mitchell Communications Group Limited.

Stuart Mitchell, Chief Executive Officer, Mitchell Communication Group described the acquisition as strategically significant.

"We expect this acquisition to add $70 million per annum to Mitchells' billings and see us become the biggest player in the WA marketplace," he said. "It further bolsters our management capacity and industry standing, allowing Mitchells to offer its clients superior strategy, great service and negotiate the best rates".

As part of the acquisition Mr Alan Matthews has also entered into a 5 year employment agreement with the Group, clearing the way for current Mitchells WA manager, Alex Pekish, to return to Melbourne. Pekish came to Perth to establish the local office but retained his national television rate negotiation role, a pivotal one for Mitchells. Pekish has strong ties to Melbourne and is understood to be keen to return.

At the same time as Micthells announced the acquisition, Starcom MediaVest Group announced it will establish a wholly-owned business in Perth following the sale of its share in the joint venture business.

"Starcom is committed to providing the highest standard of service to our national clients which includes offering full service offices in each capital city. We have decided to fund our own office in Perth to achieve this goal," Starcom Chief Operating Officer Chris Nolan said.

The announcement said Starcom is actively recruiting in Perth and will be fully operational in the near term. There is intense speculation it will be headed up by disaffected local former director, Wes Grant, who left the local operation earlier this year but has retained a link with Starcom nationally.

PADC's Brain Boost boosted

Brain_BoostGraphic.jpgThe PADC is pleased to confirm that this year's festival of ideas will be going ahead as planned. After Campaign Brief's last news posting, the club received a few more confirmed attendees which means the event is once again a viable proposition.

Said PADC President Andrew Tinning: "Of particular note was a lovely gesture from Michael Lynch from Campaign Brief in Sydney. Michael Is probably the industry's greatest  advocate when it comes to creativity. He offered to register as a 'ghost delegate' if it meant that his registration would help the cause. On behalf of the PADC thank you Michael, that level of interest and support is hugely appreciated."

The PADC will leave the registration open until Friday and encourages as many as possible to attend the event. Tinning has spoken with the judges and they are all enthusiastic about sharing their work and their knowledge with the Perth industry.

"On the day there will be some amazing work on display and the chance to discuss how it was created and delivered with them is a very unique opportunity for those lucky enough and interested enough to attend. To those of you out there with staff training budgets and commitments who haven't already shown your support, I would encourage you to have another think and reconsider making the most of what the festival has to offer," said Tinning.

Brain_BoostGraphic.jpgUnless the PADC can round up a few more delegates for their annual Festival of Ideas over the next few days it is certain to be called off. Despite a change of venue to keep it fresh and a world class panel to keep it inspirational, it appears that tough economic times have once again taken their toll with many traditional supporters pulling out this year.

PADC President Andrew Tinning confirmed that they may be forced to cancel unless they get around 15 more people.

"The Club understands that we've all been through some tough times of late and we were expecting numbers to be a bit down," said Tinning. "That's why we decided on a shift of venue to keep it fresh and invited a panel who were not just world class individuals, but who had real relevance to the Western Australian Industry - with the majority having started their careers here). A lot of time and effort has gone into organising the event but at the end of the day if we don't get more people then the numbers just don't stack up. It would be a real shame to have to turn the lights off on the event this year as these sorts of opportunities are few here in W.A. I will make one last plea for support on behalf of the PADC and we will make a final call within the next few days."

At the inaugural Australian Advertising Effie Awards held last Thursday at the Sydney Convention Centre, 303 was among those that scored metal. 303 had two finalists in the Awards. One in the 'Long Term Effects' category for the Go for 2 & 5 Nutrition campaign and the other in the 'Best State Campaign' category for the IKEA 'Love where you live' store launch. The latter took out a Bronze award in the category.
Gatecrasher was a finalist for its 'Hoons' campaign for the Office of Crime Prevention but didn't proceed beyond that stage.
The EFFIEs have replaced the AFA Effectiveness Awards, which were held every two years. 303's Bronze EFFIE is the best result for a WA agency since The Brand Agency's award at the 7th AFA Effectiveness Awards in 2003 for its BankWest Lite Mastercard launch.

On the back of two huge winter events already this year, the night lived up to expectation as the committee pulled off yet another massive event with blazers, ties, pom poms, nerd glasses and tartan skirts as far as the eye could see.
