Fairfax's news website WAtoday.com.au appoints ex-News Ltd's Allen Newton to editor-in-chief role
Announcing the appointment, Fairfax Metro Media editorial director Garry Linnell said Newton was perfectly placed to drive Fairfax's digital aspirations in Western Australia.
"Allen has been at the forefront of the digital revolution in Perth and has earned a reputation for innovative thinking that will be a great asset to Fairfax," Linnell said. "We want WAtoday to become a Fairfax hot-house for the development of talented journalists and great journalism. We believe Allen is the right person to nurture a team and to deliver those results."
In 2006, Newton was responsible for the launch of PerthNow, News Ltd's
first venture into the digital world in WA and led it to significant
success.
"We are expecting Allen to build on the success of WAtoday, which was launched by Fairfax as a stand-alone news and information website in June 2008."
Newton is a journalist with wide experience in news gathering for major media organisations and as a communications consultant in his own businesses and for private industry. He began his journalism career as a copy boy at Lang Hancock and E. A. Wright's Sunday Independent newspaper in Perth.
