Campaigns for the UK Government website, LOCOG’s Games Makers and hat-trick have been awarded Nominations in the Writing for Design category at the 51st annual D&AD judging event taking place this week at London’s Olympia Exhibition Centre. The three pieces will now be judged to establish whether any will receive a coveted D&AD Yellow Pencil.

The three pieces of work were judged to have been the best pieces of writing in the world of design from the past year – with judges praising the crisp, clean, clear style applied to the work as a whole – but particularly to GOV.UK and Games Maker where the primary audience was millions of members of the public.

Nominations in the category went to:

  • GOV.UK by Government Digital Service for Her Majesty’s Government, GOV.UK.
  • Games Maker by adam&eveDDB for London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), London 2012
  • Disappointments Diary 2013 by hat-trick design for Asbury & Asbury, hat-trick design

A further six pieces of work were awarded In-Book status by the judging panel for the Writing for Design category. The In-Book work, which will appear in the 51st D&AD Annual, was:

  • Best of Britain by BD Network for Heinz Australia, HP Sauce
  • RNLI Homeware Range by Roger Horberry for RNLI Homeware
  • The Wine That Sold Beer by Colenso BBDO for DB Breweries, Export Dry
  • Lessons in Riding: Wig / Crotch / Penny by McCann-Erickson Malaysia for Grafa
  • The Useful Book by Acne Advertising for Acne R&D
  • !f Istanbul Corporate Identity by TBWA\ISTANBUL for !f Istanbul International Independent Film Festival

Entrants will have to wait until the award ceremony on 12 June to find out whether they have been awarded a coveted Yellow Pencil.

Says Mike Reed, foreman of the Writing for Design Jury at D&AD 2013: “A quality of freshness is something we’re always looking for and this year, I’m really interested in writing which takes you by surprise or which takes a completely new angle on a problem.

“Whilst there is definitely a familiar spread of work similar to previous years, one piece that has really stood out for me is perhaps not what everyone would expect – the GOV.UK website. It’s not only because the website has come so far from what it was before, both in terms of writing and design, it also just works amazingly well, and is such a surprise for a government website.

“I think we’re seeing a real shift in people’s understanding of what words can bring to design and the value they can have. Brands are really waking up to the power that words can bring.”
