On 27 May 2013, Minister Garrett also announced that the 2013 Positive Body Image Awards have been extended to include organisations and individuals in the health and wellbeing industry. Applications are open from 27 May to 21 June 2013, and winners will be announced in August.

Says Alina Bain, acting CEO of AANA: “These awards recognise advertisers who are providing a real and ongoing commitment to body image friendly practices. We’re looking for campaigns or branding that increases a young person’s awareness about dieting, digital retouching and other industry practices so that there is a realistic expectation of body type amongst  young Australians.

“Advertisers are often accused of contributing to the anxiety a lot of young people feel about body image but there are many brands that have positive messages at their core. More can be done though and the awards will also look at things like media placement strategy and the use of social media to show that as an industry we can be a major part of this very important government initiative.”

Bain is representing advertisers on the awards judging panel along with other members who represent a cross section of the community, industry and young people.

The Awards, sponsored by the Federal Minister for Youth, the Hon Peter Garrett, will focus on initiatives targeted at children and young people aged 12-25. Judges will give consideration to advertising that associates the brand with editorial or community events which promote positive body image or campaigns which focus on fun and a healthy lifestyle rather than a particular body type.

Recipients of the Awards will be able to use the Body Image Award Winner symbol, which will help consumers recognise and support those who embrace positive body image.
